Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has heavily criticised midfielder Enzo Fernández for speaking out of turn, stating that a player must never publicly broadcast their bitterness or overstate their own performances when a team is struggling.

Ex France and AC Milan centre-back Desailly insisted that modern players must show greater respect for the clubs that provided them the platform to rise to prominence, rather than treating their European tenures with indifference.

He contrasted Fernández’s disruptive public conduct with that of team-mate Cole Palmer – who handled intense transfer speculation quietly last season.

Chelsea vice-captain Fernandez was suspended by the club for two games for talking out of turn.

Don’t show bitterness

During an exclusive conversation with MrRaffle.com, Desailly, a legendary leader who captained Chelsea during his six years at Stamford Bridge, said: “It’s not right, especially if it’s coming straight from the mouth of the player.

“I mean, you need to have that respect and allow the people around you – your representatives – to work like a submarine to negotiate and deal with it. You cannot show your bitterness publicly.

“Last season you won; this season it doesn’t happen. Be fair play. It happens.

“Don’t tell us that you’ve been magnificent and that you don’t have anything to regret about your own performance. It’s not possible.”

Praise for Palmer

When talking about Manchester United’s interest in England star Palmer, Desailly added: “Palmer was also in a similar situation with Manchester United links, but he has been quiet.

“He has been very quiet. So it is something that you have to learn.

“You know, some of the South American guys, they come to Europe and they don’t really care.

“Today they are here, tomorrow they can go anywhere. Fair enough, nobody is complaining, but it is what it is.

“Sometimes you have to respect the club.

“You’ve been able to raise your name through your performances, yes, but the club also gave you the tools to be able to rise to that level in the first place.”
