Emile Heskey has named Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold as the “perfect” signing for Liverpool – and thinks Rio Ngumoha is pushing for an England call-up.
When asked if there was a player he would love to see at Anfield, he pined for a reunion with Madrid’s classy full-back.
He also explained how Liverpool wonderkid Ngumoha has an opportunity to cement his place in the starting line-up for club and country over the next few weeks.
During an exclusive sitdown interview with BestBettingSites, Heskey said: “We’re struggling at right-back…despite the performances of [Ronald] Araujo.
“I would love Trent to come back. Whether he would, I’m not sure.
“Obviously with Trent, it’ll be about him and his people deciding whether they want to come back to Liverpool.
Welcomed back with open arms
“I think he’d be welcomed back with open arms by the majority of Liverpool fans, to be honest with you.
“You will always get some who probably hold a bit of a grudge because of how he departed on the free transfer, “Well, we don’t want him back, he did this.”
“No, let’s move on from there. Let’s think about what he did on the grass for Liverpool.
“I don’t think we need any more wingers. With Rio Ngumoha putting in the performances he is, I think he’s really putting everyone under pressure now – the manager and the older players.
“There are more senior members in that squad who would like to think they are ahead of him. Are they really ahead of him now? I don’t think so.”
Impressive form for Reds
When asked if Ngumoha has put himself in contention for a starting spot for England, Heskey added: “Yeah, I think so. Rio has been so impressive this season.
“It’s a bit difficult when you say for England, because there is some heavyweight competition in the wide areas.
“Players like Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon are ahead of him at the moment, but he’s definitely putting them on notice.
“He’s not far behind and he’s only probably one or two solid performances away from actually really pushing them and taking their place.
“He also has a brilliant opportunity in the next camp with Saka being ruled out. When those kinds of opportunities present themselves, you have to take them as a player.
“I think he’s a dead cert for Tuchel’s next England squad. Let’s see if he can take the opportunity and impress the manager.”
