Ben Shelton shocked Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka overcame Linda Nosková in US Open quarter-final action on Tuesday.
Eighth seed Shelton produced the biggest win of his career against the second-seeded men’s defending champion and will now meet fellow American Frances Tiafoe, who edged Alex Michelsen, in the last four.
Women’s defending champion and top seed Sabalenka, meanwhile, survived a scare to topple sixth-seeded Wimbledon winner Nosková and set up a semi-final showdown with Jessica Pegula, who beat Emma Navarro.
Shelton triumphs, Tiafoe awaits
Speaking courtside after securing an epic 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-3 1-6 7-6 (10-7) win, Shelton said on Sky Sports: “For me, it’s always about the people in the crowd, whether it’s my coaches, team or friends and family – or the city of New York that showed up until 3am with the USA chants.
“That’s what kept me going and what got me this win. It’s incredible.
“This is the greatest sports city and greatest stadium in the world.
“I’m so grateful, so blessed to be in front of you guys and to share the court with Carlos is an absolute honour.”
Elsewhere, 11th seed Tiafoe was made to work hard in a 5-7 3-6 7-5 6-3 7-6 (10-6) comeback.
Reflecting on the result, Tiafoe explained: “He [Michelsen] gave me some gifts, a couple of double faults there.
“But then I slowly started to get my rhythm, snuck out the third set and slowly started playing better and better.
“He is a hell of a player – he should’ve easily won, so shout out Alex Michelsen.
“Everyone was sleeping in the first couple of hours and I was asleep with you all.
“Thank you [to the crowd] for being there for me. I really appreciate that.”

Sabalenka, Pegula to clash
According to Sky Sports, following a topsy-turvy 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 7-6 (10-7) victory, Sabalenka stated: “Thinking the match is over is probably what helped me to feel loose, go for my shots.
“I am super happy to get this win – a tough match, tough battle.
“These kind of crowds, tie-breaks and these matches that are such high pressure boost my confidence and my energy.
“For now, I just want to relax, recover and reflect on what happened.”
During her own on-court interview, third seed Pegula admitted: “It was really tough, really physical.
“I wasn’t serving my best. I was fighting a lot of demons out there.
“I do a great job on having a short-term memory – I know every time I come out, no matter what, I have to tell the negative me to shut up and just play tennis and compete.”
In an all-American match-up, Pegula defeated 26th seed Navarro 3-6 6-4 6-3.
