Dion Dublin believes Aston Villa are entering an exciting new chapter under Unai Emery, drawing a direct comparison between Villa’s squad transformation and Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous squad refresh at Manchester United in the mid-1990s.

When it came to making football predictions ahead of the new season, Villa fans can have been forgiven for having concerns ahead of the 2026/2027 Premier League and Champions League campaigns, having lost several key players over the summer.

Morgan Rogers became the most expensive British player after he signed for Chelsea for a whopping £117million, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez would duly follow him to Stamford Bridge.

Ezri Konsa joined Premier League champions Arsenal, while Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne also moved on.

A new chapter

And while former Villa striker Dublin admitted that losing established first-team players can be a shock to fans, he believes a major shake-up often lays the foundation for long-term success.

“I think this feels like the start of a new chapter for Aston Villa under Unai Emery,” Dublin said in a chat with Reviant.

“You can compare it to Manchester United when Sir Alex Ferguson turned over the squad and refreshed things in the mid 90s.

“I think that’s a very good parallel to draw.

“People were shocked when Sir Alex moved on players like Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis, but look at what they went on to do.”

Regular starters moved on

Dublin, who now enjoys an esteemed career in television, also acknowledged that replacing core regular starters won’t be easy for Emery, but he backs the Villa boss to hit reset and move forward effectively.

“It’s going to be difficult for Villa,” Dublin explained. “Youri Tielemans, Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, Emi Martinez — that’s six players, all key starters.

“They’ve lost other players from the first team who weren’t starters too, but I think the comparison with United under Sir Alex Ferguson is a very good way of looking at it because what’s happened has happened. OK. Under Unai Emery, let’s go again.”

Urging Villa supporters to stay patient while the new-look squad gels, Dublin remains confident the quality is in place to deliver results.

“It’s not about continuing from where we were. It’s a chance at something new,” Dublin added.

“Once they get used to each other again, the quality is there in the players they’ve brought in.

“It’s just going to be different and the fans have got to be patient because it can all be worth it in the end.”
