The Premier League is heating up at the top and bottom of the table, with Manchester City and Aston Villa emerging as the biggest threats to league leaders Arsenal.

At the other end of the table, West Ham are locked in a fierce battle for survival, with Burnley and Wolves looking all-but doomed for a return to the English Championship.

Here, Sport Just Sport writer Alex Rhodes takes a look at the televised top-flight games in Matchweek 23 – and provides some predictions and suggested bets.

West Ham vs Sunderland, Saturday 12:30pm

For West Ham, this game may be pivotal in their battle to avoid relegation, as they currently sit five points adrift of safety and are running out of margin for error.

This is only the second meeting between the sides in eight years, with Sunderland comfortably winning 3-0 when they last met in the summer at the Stadium of Light.

Although undefeated at home, Sunderland have failed to win any of their last six away games and were unable to score in seven of their total 11 away matches.

West Ham, meanwhile, haven’t kept a clean sheet in 20 matches. Conceding 12 goals from headed efforts, a league-high, emphasises their defensive struggles.

Prediction: Game to end in draw

Bournemouth vs Liverpool, Saturday 5:30pm

Although Liverpool haven’t lost a match since November 26, winning 3-0 against Marseille in the Champions League in midweek, the reigning league champions have drawn their last four games, most recently 1-1 against Burnley.

The Cherries’ last win came against Tottenham Hotspur on January 7, with the now-Manchester City player Antoine Semenyo scoring the winner.

Since then, they have slumped to 15th in the league on 27 points.

For Bournemouth, the noticeable improvement of Liverpool’s £120million summer signing Florian Wirtz spells danger as the German has scored four goals and provided two assists in the last month.

Prediction – Liverpool to win and score over two goals

Brentford vs Nottingham Forest, Sunday 2pm

A fixture where entertainment is guaranteed, the last goalless meeting between the two was February 1935 in the League Two Division.

Brentford’s talisman, Igor Thiago, has scored five goals in the last three matches, as the Bees continue their strong season, sitting three points off Champions League qualification.

Nottingham Forest have suffered contrasting fortunes.

This season, they have lost six of their last seven away matches to London clubs, with their only away win in the last month coming in a 2-1 victory against former manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s West Ham.

Prediction – over 2.5 goals in the game

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea, Sunday 2pm

For Chelsea, this fixture has been welcome over the last decade, as they haven’t lost to Crystal Palace since 2017, when they were beaten 2-1.

The last three meetings have ended in draws; however the Blues, under new manager Liam Rosenior, present a new challenge for Palace.

The Eagles haven’t won in their last five matches, with club captain Marc Guéhi departing for Manchester City, leaving their defence vulnerable.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is the club’s leading scorer with eight league goals, but the Frenchman hasn’t scored in his last four outings, relying on new signing Brennan Johnson to contribute to the scoresheet.

Chelsea haven’t won back-to-back Premier League matches since November, but their 2-0 win over Brentford will give them confidence heading into Sunday’s clash, especially if England forward Cole Palmer returns from injury.

Prediction – Chelsea to win 2-0

Newcastle vs Aston Villa, Sunday 2pm

In recent years this fixture has been a goal frenzy, with a total of 18 goals scored in the last five meetings, including a 0-0 draw in their most recent contest.

Aston Villa, under Unai Emery’s leadership, are currently the third best away side this season.

However, a 3-0 defeat last time at St James’ Park, coupled with injury concerns for John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara, may unsettle the Midlands side.

In midweek, Newcastle defeated PSV 3-0 in the Champions League, cementing their position in the top eight, as Anthony Gordon scored to equal Alan Shearer’s club record of six goals in the tournament.

Prediction – both teams to score, match to have over 2.5 goals

Arsenal vs Manchester United, Sunday 4:30pm

Arsenal are unbeaten in 11 games and have kept the most clean sheets of any team this season (11).

The Gunners haven’t lost to United since 2022 and defeated them 1-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season, courtesy of a goal from centre-back Riccardo Calafiori.

Manchester United made an electric start under interim manager Michael Carrick, beating rivals Manchester City 2-0 last weekend, moving them up to fifth place, as Bryan Mbuemo scored his first goal since returning from AFCON.

In recent weeks, Arsenal have struggled to break down teams.

They lead the league in set-piece success, but when this threat is neutralised, they can struggle to score, a trend evident in 0-0 draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

However, their attacking depth has been reinforced by the return of Gabriel Jesus, who scored twice in a 3-1 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Prediction – Arsenal to win and Gabriel Jesus to score anytime

Everton vs Leeds, Monday 8pm

The news of Jack Grealish’s foot injury, which sidelines the Englishman for three months, will have sunk the hearts of Evertonians dreaming of European football for the first time since the 2017/18 season.

Everton have struggled for goals, but with two wins in their last five matches, notably a 1-0 win away at Aston Villa, the Toffees have shown signs of improvement.

For Leeds, in-form players Dominic Calvert Lewin and Brenden Aaronson will be crucial as they search for their third successive win in all competitions.

This attacking threat will be important for Everton to suppress, as defender Michael Keane continues to serve his suspension following a red card in their 1-1 draw against Wolves on January 7.

Prediction – match to end in a 1-1 draw
