Manchester United’s late-season surge under Michael Carrick gathered further momentum on Sunday, May 3, as a 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford reinforced the interim manager’s growing case for a permanent appointment.
Rather than a one-off result, the win fits a broader pattern.
Carrick has now overseen a sequence of high-stakes victories against top-six opposition, including Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool, suggesting a side increasingly defined by resilience and belief in decisive moments.

Carrick responds to Ferguson concern
Post-match, Carrick also addressed reports involving Sir Alex Ferguson, who was taken to the hospital after feeling ill at the stadium prior to kick-off.
“Well, I haven’t got any update so I don’t know the latest as we stand now,” Carrick said, regarding the iconic United manager.
“I did hear about it before the game so I was aware of it before the game.
“All I can say is I wish him the best. I’m very affected by it, the news, and I just hope he’s alright.
“I just don’t know the latest but we hope for him to be in good shape and we wish him all the best.
“We certainly think that hopefully the result, when he hears about it, can give him a boost,” Carrick added on Sky Sports.
Momentum reshaping United’s season
With three matches remaining, United are now in control of the race for third place in the Premier League.
The turnaround is particularly notable given the difficulties earlier in the campaign under former manager Ruben Amorim.
Carrick’s impact has shifted the narrative from recovery to genuine upward momentum, with performances against elite opposition offering the clearest indication yet of a side reshaped in both confidence and competitive edge.
