F1 news: Winners and losers from 2026 Miami GP – McLaren, Ferrari and more

Miami Grand Prix podium and Ferrari

Kimi Antonelli made history once again with a hat-trick of back-to-back poles and wins, ahead of Lando Norris in second and Oscar Piastri in third.

Mercedes driver Antonelli’s continued dominance makes him the clear winner, but in a race full of action, there were plenty of other winners across the grid.

With four DNFs, the losers should be clear, but many others did finish and still had a loser of a weekend.

Here, Sport Just Sport writer Ella Magyar gives her winners and losers from a chaotic Miami race weekend.

Winner – McLaren

McLaren brought a whole host of upgrades to the Miami race weekend, bringing a lot of promise to the fans – and they definitely delivered.

With the upgraded car, the reigning world champions secured a 1-2 finish in the sprint race – Norris claiming pole position and the win and Piastri following him home in second.

Despite a struggle in qualifying, with Norris qualifying in fourth and Piastri in seventh, Norris managed to make progress and led for 15 laps of the race early on.

Though he was jumped in the pits by Antonelli, he held strong in second and used his pace to create a significant gap to third place.

Piastri also made progress at the start but dropped places in the pit stop sequence; however, with strong pace in the car, he progressed back up the order to third with some good battles.

Loser – Ferrari

Ferrari brought even more upgrades to their car, a total of 11, and the most of any team on the grid.

Having secured a podium in the sprint race with Charles Leclerc, and Leclerc qualifying in third for the main race, hopes were high for the Scuderia heading into Sunday.

Leclerc managed to get a good start yet again and led the race heading into turn 1. However, he was soon overtaken and began to drop away from Norris and Antonelli significantly.

Though running strong in third for most of the race, Leclerc had a last-lap spin and hit the wall, which not only cost him a podium but also caused him to go off track several times due to the damage.

The consistent skipping of right-hand chicanes caused a 20-second time penalty post-race, dropping his sixth-place finish to eighth.

Meanwhile, whilst team-mate Lewis Hamilton had a few battles with Max Verstappen early on in the race, he ultimately had a lonely race in seventh, finishing on the road behind where he qualified until Leclerc’s penalty bumped him to sixth post-race.

Winner – Franco Colapinto

Colapinto has had an underwhelming start to the season, comprehensively beaten by his team-mate Pierre Gasly in all competitive sessions.

However, this time, the Argentinian driver looked to have the better of his team-mate all weekend.

Having qualified in eighth, Colapinto had a strong drive, delaying his pit-stop past the halfway point, leaving him running in fourth at one point.

After the pit-stop sequence had played out, Colapinto held his own and matched his best-ever finishing position in eighth, his best since September 2024, until he was bumped to seventh after Leclerc’s post-race penalty.

Loser – George Russell

Russell headed into the season as clear favourite for the world drivers’ championship title and looked convincingly strong and on-track in the first race of the season.

However, since then, his team-mate Antonelli has had the better of him, especially in Miami, where Russell seemed to struggle all weekend compared to his team-mate, being four-tenths off Antonelli’s pace in both qualifying sessions.

Ultimately, Russell finished fourth on the road, but this result was flattered by Leclerc’s last-lap spin.

In a car clearly capable of winning the race, Russell’s performance was underwhelming and allowed his team-mate to grow the gap in the championship standings, meaning Leclerc in third place is now closer to Russell than he is to Antonelli.

Winner – Williams

Williams have had a disappointing start to the season, scoring just five points so far.

After finally bringing an upgrade package that was meant to appear in round one, Williams managed to make some progress, getting both cars out of Q1, with Carlos Sainz qualifying in 14th and Alex Albon in 16th.

Both cars managed to make even more progress during the race, and with some impressive battles, the team secured their first double-points finish of the season in ninth and 10th.

Though Williams were still significantly off the pace, evidenced in the 20-second gap to Colapinto, this is still huge progress they perhaps weren’t expecting to make so early on.

Loser – Audi

Despite an impressive start to the season, the Audi team had nothing short of a messy weekend in Miami.

Reliability proved to be their biggest issue across the weekend as both cars produced flames at different points.

Nico Hulkenberg’s fiery issues came first in the sprint race, and team-mate Gabriel Bortoletto’s car followed suit in the main qualifying session.

Hulkenberg’s car was fixed in time for qualifying after Bortoletto’s side of the garage pitched in to help when it looked like Bortoletto had an issue that was going to prevent him from taking part in the session.

Bortolleto managed to make it out at the very end but ended up qualifying last and encountering the same fiery issues as Hulkenberg.

Sunday proved no better for the team, as Hulkenberg was involved in an incident on lap one, forcing him to retire the car.

Bortoletto managed to finish the race and make up places but ultimately finished 12th, leaving Audi pointless for the third weekend in a row.
