The second round of group-stage fixtures officially began with the USA becoming the first team to secure a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 World Cup with a convincing victory over Australia.
Fellow Group D members Turkey, who were widely tipped as potential dark horses before the tournament, suffered an early elimination from the tournament after a slim defeat to Paraguay in San Francisco.
In Group C, Brazil eased to a 3-0 victory over Haiti to end the Caribbean side’s World Cup campaign, while Morocco edged past Scotland 1-0 to leave a dent in the Tartan Army’s hopes of reaching the Round of 32.
Pochettino emotional as USA top Group D
Co-hosts USA produced another impressive display to defeat Australia 2-0 and secure top spot in Group D with a game to spare.
Despite the absence of captain Christian Pulisic through a calf injury, Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked every bit as energetic and dominant in their opening victory over Paraguay.
An own goal from the Socceroos’ Cameron Burgess and a strike from Alex Freeman secured consecutive World Cup victories for the US for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1930.
Pochettino described how he was overcome with emotion following the final whistle.
“Even if I am not American, after the game I was emotional,” the Argentine said.
“The fans were amazing…it was a perfect connection between the energy from the stands and the team.”
After an underwhelming lead-in to the tournament, the Americans have emerged as one of the competition’s surprise packages, making full use of home advantage and playing with an assuredness that few anticipated.
Having secured first-place, the USA are now set to face a third-placed qualifier in the Round of 32, significantly improving their chances of advancing deeper into the tournament, a prospect that even the most optimistic supporter would not have imagined possible.

Scotland’s hopes dented by Morocco
Scotland’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages suffered a major setback after conceding inside the opening two minutes against Morocco.
Ismael Saibari gave the African side the perfect start, beating the Scottish backline’s offside trap and firing past goalkeeper Angus Gunn after just 70 seconds.
Steve Clarke’s side struggled to create many clear-cut opportunities, despite some positive spells throughout.
Appeals for penalties for fouls on John McGinn and Scott McTominay were waved away, while Morocco defender Issa Diop escaped with only a yellow card following a last-man challenge on striker Che Adams.
Clarke admitted his disappointment with the officiating but remained optimistic about Scotland’s chances.
“You have to let the players suffer over the next 48 hours as they don’t like losing,” he said.
“We’ll rest, recover and go again, the games don’t get easier.”
A draw would have secured Scotland’s progression, but defeat leaves them needing a positive result against Brazil in their final group match to keep their World Cup dream alive.
Brazil breeze past Haiti
Brazil comfortably beat Haiti 3-0 thanks to first-half goals from Matheus Cunha and Vinicius Junior.
The defeat sealed Haiti’s fate as the first nation to be eliminated from the tournament and guaranteed they would finish bottom of Group C.
The result all but secures Brazil’s place in the knockout rounds ahead of their final group-stage clash with Scotland.
Yet with progression essentially confirmed, there remains a sense that Carlo Ancelotti’s side have yet to reach their best form.
The Italian was honest and measured when reflecting on his side’s performance after the match.
“We were much better first half. In the second half, they had little bit more control, but we had opportunities to score more goals. All in all it was a good match,”
“We don’t think about knocking out Scotland. We think about playing well and improving, and we analyse the match.” He added.
Brazil are expected to welcome Neymar back for the meeting with Scotland after the forward recovered from a calf injury that had ruled him out of the first two games.
Whether the 34-year-old can still provide the game-changing brilliance that once made him one of the world’s best players remains to be seen, but his return undoubtedly strengthens the options at Ancelotti’s disposal, particularly after Raphina was forced off through injury.
A 3-0 win may send Brazil on their way to the knockout stages, but sterner tests await them.
When coming up against the best sides in the tournament, the Selecao will need the intensity, creativity, and cutting edge that has defined their previous sides if they want to fulfil their ambition of winning a sixth World Cup.
Almiron sent off as Paraguay send Turkey home
Miguel Almiron became the first player sent off under FIFA’s new rule penalising players who cover their mouths while they are speaking to opponents.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Paraguay rode out a 1-0 victory over Turkey after Matias Galarza’s long-range strike found the net within 64 seconds.
Turkey spent the entire match chasing the equaliser, yet were frustrated by Paraguay’s resilient display.
Turkey peppered the Paraguayan goal, registering 32 shots, but only managed five on target – a frustratingly similar story to their last match with Australia.
Having also recorded 30 attempts in that defeat, Turkey have now accumulated 62 shots across their last two matches without scoring – the highest total over two games since 1966, according to Opta.
While misfortune has played a part, Turkey’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal and persistent defensive frailties ultimately proved costly.
An exit at the group stage will be viewed as nothing other than a disaster, considering their pre-tournament status as dark horses.
With Turkey eliminated, Paraguay and Australia will battle for qualification in a head-to-head that promises to be a decisive and highly entertaining final round in Group D.
