Liverpool have reportedly agreed a season-long loan deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo as Andoni Iraola looks to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the new season.

The move is not yet fully completed, with Araujo still required to undergo a medical before the transfer can be officially confirmed.

However, the reported agreement could give Liverpool an experienced addition capable of filling multiple roles.

Araujo brings versatility and Barcelona experience

Araujo has established himself as a prominent defender during his time at Barcelona, making more than 140 appearances for the Catalan club.

Primarily a centre-back, the Uruguay international can also operate at right-back, giving Iraola additional flexibility when selecting his defensive line.

His physicality and experience at the highest level could prove particularly valuable for Liverpool, who have been looking to add depth at the back following Ibrahima Konate’s departure and injuries affecting other defenders.

Araujo was also part of Barcelona’s La Liga-winning squad last season, although he made just 11 league starts.

How will he fit into Iraola’s Liverpool?

The biggest question will be how quickly Araujo can adapt to Iraola’s tactical demands and develop chemistry with his new defensive teammates.

His ability to play both centrally and on the right could make him a useful option alongside Liverpool’s existing defenders, particularly with the squad dealing with several absences.

Araujo’s physical qualities could also complement Liverpool’s approach, while his experience in Barcelona’s possession-based environment gives him a background in playing within a structured system.

However, exactly where Iraola intends to use him will only become clearer once the Uruguayan joins the squad and begins training.

Deal close as agreement nears completion

While Liverpool and Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement over a season-long loan, Araujo’s move is not yet officially complete.

The defender was expected to travel to England for his medical, with reports indicating that the deal includes an option for Liverpool to make the transfer permanent.

That means Liverpool supporters will have to wait for the medical and remaining formalities before Araujo can officially become an Anfield player.

If everything is completed as expected, the 27-year-old could provide Iraola with an important short-term solution while giving Liverpool the opportunity to assess whether they want to pursue a permanent deal next summer.READ
