The FA Community Shield is a trophy nobody wants to lose, yet history suggests winning it could be the worst possible omen for a Premier League title challenge.
Manchester City have entered the post-Guardiola era under Italian head coach Enzo Maresca, while Arsenal arrive as the Premier League champions with a significantly strengthened squad.
Both sides meet at the Principality Stadium on Sunday, August 16 for a blockbuster clash, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm BST.
The Community Shield has moved to Cardiff because Wembley is unavailable for pre-season concerts, giving the traditional season curtain-raiser a different backdrop for the first time since 2006.
Players and transfer season
Arsenal enter as the reigning Premier League champions, while Man City qualified after winning the FA Cup.
Both clubs have made significant moves in the transfer market this summer.
Arsenal have added Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, who will provide competition and cover for David Raya in goal.
Elliot Anderson is Manchester City’s headline midfield arrival, with the Citizens working to strengthen an area that could undergo major changes.
Rodri’s future is increasingly uncertain amid interest from Spain, while Bernardo Silva has also moved to Real Madrid.
Arsenal’s defensive options remain stretched, with William Saliba sidelined while Jurrien Timber is working towards a late-August return.
Man City have fewer concerns, with Rodri their only major absentee for the match.
Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic are fit, while Jack Grealish continues to build match fitness.
For Manchester City, the fixture also marks the beginning of the Enzo Maresca era, adding another layer to an already intriguing contest.
The former Chelsea boss now has the task of putting his own stamp on a side built around years of Pep Guardiola’s principles.
Arteta, meanwhile, will look to add to the Gunners’ trophy cabinet.

Arsenal vs Man City predicted lineups
Arsenal are expected to start with David Raya on goal, with Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori forming the back-four.
Guimaraes should anchor the midfield alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, while Bukayo Saka and Christos Tzolis flank Kai Havertz in attack.
Saliba’s injury means Hincapie will partner Magalhaes in defence.
The Ecuadorian’s aggressive defending and ability to play forward make him a natural complement to his centre-back partner.
Guimaraes will provide Arsenal with greater bite in midfield, but his ability to receive the ball under pressure and drive it forward could prove just as important.
Havertz’s record against Manchester City also strengthens his case to lead the line.
He has scored three goals and provided four assists against them, including the assist for Arsenal’s equaliser in their last Community Shield meeting, which the Gunners later won on penalties.
Having also scored in two Champions League finals, the German has developed a habit of delivering on the biggest stages, making Manchester City one of his favourite opponents.
Man City are expected to line up with Gianluigi Donnarumma behind Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Nico O’Reilly.
Mateo Kovacic and Elliot Anderson should form the midfield base, with Phil Foden ahead of them while Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo provide width on either side of Erling Haaland.
Anderson’s energy and ability to carry the ball offer Maresca an alternative to the control that Rodri normally provides.
Keeping Doku and Semenyo wide should stretch Arsenal’s defensive shape while Donnarumma gives the Cityzens another comfortable passer when building from the back.
These selections also hint at how the two managers could approach the game.
Arteta’s starting XI gives Arsenal a strong platform in the middle, with Guimaraes and Rice able to protect the defence and Odegaard to influence the attack.
Maresca, meanwhile, has the pace and width of Doku and Semenyo to stretch Arsenal before Foden looks to exploit the spaces inside.
The Citizens can then use Haaland as a direct outlet, while Donnarumma’s composure on the ball allows them to build patiently when passing options are available.

The tactical battles that could decide the Community Shield
The midfield battle could set the tone in Cardiff.
Arsenal’s pairing of Rice and Guimaraes gives Arteta two players capable of winning the ball, carrying it forward, and keeping Arsenal’s possession moving under pressure.
That would give Odegaard more freedom to find pockets between Man City’s midfield and defence, where his passing can turn control into chances.
Rodri’s absence means Maresca will have to find a different way for Manchester City to control the midfield.
Rather than giving one player the task to dictate the game from the base of midfield, Kovacic and Anderson can share those responsibilities.
Anderson’s energy gives Man City a more aggressive ball-carrier.
But Rodri’s absence removes the calm presence that has so often allowed Man City to control matches when opponents threaten to break through the middle.
The battles at either end of the pitch could just be as important.
Gabriel and Hincapie will have to deal with Haaland’s strength while preventing him from running into the space behind them.
At the other end, Saka will look to attack Man City’s left side much more directly while Tzolis will give Man City’s right-back Nunes a run for his money.
Manchester City are expected to pass more vertically under Maresca, looking for Haaland and the wide players faster rather than circulating possession endlessly.
Arsenal can counter that with quick transitions of their own.
Their compact shape would attempt to shut the middle and force Manchester City wide, while Maresca’s narrow pressing structure would look to crowd Arsenal’s central passing areas.
The key adjustment may come when one side breaks from that pattern.
If Arsenal can draw Man City’s midfield forward before releasing Saka or Tzolis into space, they can expose the space behind the press.
Manchester City, meanwhile, will want to isolate Arsenal’s full-backs and get Doku or Semenyo running at them.
Whoever wins those decisive moments in transition could have the clearest route to victory.

Arsenal vs Man City head-to-head record, key statistics and prediction
Recent meetings offer little to separate the sides.
Man City have won two of their last five encounters, Arsenal one, with the other two ending level.
Manchester City’s latest victory came in April, when Erling Haaland scored the winner in a 2-1 league victory at the Etihad, although Arsenal still went on to clinch the title.
The Gunners also have happier memories of this fixture, beating Man City on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the 2023 Community Shield, while their last meeting in the competition before that ended in a 3-0 Arsenal win in 2014.
The Community Shield has increasingly become a competition where FA Cup winners can upset the league champions, while four of the last six finals have been decided on penalties.
The Cityzen’s record has also been mixed despite their dominance elsewhere.
Guimaraes is Arsenal’s player to watch, with his midfield battle against Man City potentially decisive.
Haaland remains Manchester City’s biggest threat.
Arsenal’s continuity under Arteta, Maresca’s new era and Rodri’s absence could tilt the balance in the Gunners’ favour.
Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Manchester City.
