Arsenal fought their way past Everton while Manchester City dropped points against West Ham at the weekend, leaving the Gunners a step closer to the Premier League title.

Elsewhere, Liverpool conceded late to draw with Tottenham Hotspur, dealing another blow to their hopes of a top-four finish.

Manchester City – Loser

Pre-match, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said: “If we drop points, it [the title race] will be over.”

A lacklustre 1-1 draw with relegation-battling West Ham leaves City nine points behind Arsenal, who look set for their first league title since 2003/04.

The only team to overturn such a gap with over 30 games played is Man City themselves, when they clawed back a nine-point deficit with five games remaining in 2013/14.

Despite 72% possession and 24 shots, Man City were unable to capitalise, while the Hammers converted their only shot of the match to level the game.

After their crushing 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid midweek, Guardiola’s side have won just two of their last five matches. Yet the Spaniard now insists: “It’s not over. Because we didn’t lose.”

Tottenham Hotspur – Winner

Although Tottenham only earned a point at Anfield, it could have huge consequences for their season.

Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and West Ham all gained points this weekend, meaning the 1-1 draw with Liverpool keeps Spurs above the relegation zone.

A 90th-minute equaliser from Richarlison punished the Reds for a lacklustre second-half display and marked the sixth goal the Brazilian has scored against them – the most he has against any opponent.

Despite this, Igor Tudor’s side remains one of only two teams in English league football yet to win a league game this year, along with Sheffield Wednesday.

Next weekend, they face Forest in a match that could prove crucial in their fight to avoid relegation.

Chelsea – Loser

After a 5-2 defeat to PSG in the Champions League, Liam Rosenior’s side looked to bounce back against Newcastle, who have struggled to find league form.

However, a piercing Anthony Gordon goal was enough to seal victory for Newcastle, who now sit ninth in the table.

It marks the first consecutive defeats for the Blues under Rosenior, who felt his side “lacked the cutting edge…the [Newcastle] goal knocked the wind out of our sails.”

Chelsea have now failed to win in three consecutive games at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 2023 and have dropped out of the Champions League qualification places.

The positive news for Chelsea this week is that captain Reece James signed a new long-term contract until 2032, with Rosenior describing the Englishman as the “best footballer in the world in his position”.

Manchester United – Winner

A 3-1 win for Manchester United over Aston Villa moved the Red Devils up to third in the table, as Michael Carrick remains unbeaten at home.

They move ahead of Villa, who have picked up just 12 points from their last 12 games, while Unai Emery’s side have now lost three consecutive league matches for the first time since February 2023.

United captain Bruno Fernandes has now surpassed David Beckham’s assist record in a single league campaign (16), set in 1999/00.

The result moves Carrick’s side to within seven points of Manchester City, with the United manager saying: “We looked a good team…I was pretty happy.”

Liverpool – Loser

“Liverpool are playing as if they are asleep,” were former Reds right-back Jamie Carragher’s comments during the second half.

Richarlison’s equaliser means Liverpool have now conceded eight goals after the 90th minute this season, the most in the club’s history.

They have also dropped seven points from winning positions at Anfield, the most since the 2016/17 campaign.

Post-match, Carragher added: “[It was an] awful performance… It’s been like this all season.”

Arne Slot’s side missed the opportunity to move into the top four and now sit two points behind Aston Villa as the Reds travel to Brighton next weekend.
