Ruben Amorim hailed his “biggest win” as Manchester United manager after the Red Devils snatched a late 2-1 win at Liverpool on Sunday.
Harry Maguire’s header gave the visitors their first victory at the home of their fiercest rivals since 2016 and has threatened to turn the Reds’ recent slump in form into a full-blown crisis.
Earlier, Bryan Mbeumo had given United a dream start with a first-minute strike, but Cody Gakpo – who also hit the woodwork three times – looked to have earned a point for the hosts with the equaliser 12 minutes from time.
Maguire had other ideas, however, and his header from Bruno Fernandes’ cross sent the visiting fans into ecstasy and moved United up to ninth in the Premier League table.
Win ‘means a lot’ to Amorim
Reflecting on the win, United boss Amorim said: “That was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United. It means a lot today but tomorrow it won’t mean a lot.
“It was really important for our fans. To win in the stadium of the champions and our biggest rivals is really important.”
Matchwinner Maguire echoed his manager’s thoughts but urged his team-mates not to get too far ahead of themselves.
He said: “This club will probably get a few plaudits this week: resilience, fighting spirit.
“But if we don’t perform next weekend against Brighton, it will be exactly the same the following week, so we need to build on it.
“We need to build momentum, we need to build positive performances – that’s the most important thing.”

Late goals continue to haunt Liverpool
The defeat is the first time since 2014 that Liverpool have lost four games in a row and marks a remarkable decline in fortunes for Slot’s side after they had won their first five league games of the campaign.
Those victories were punctuated by a sequence of late, late winners but events have now turned full circle for the Reds.
Since their last win – a 2-1 defeat of Southampton in the EFL Cup on September 29 – Liverpool have conceded goals in the 98th, 96th, and 85th minutes to lose to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and United, respectively.

Reds still feeling confident, says Slot
The Reds will look to bounce back against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday and Slot has seen no sign of his team’s heads dropping.
He told reporters: “If you win games, you want to keep winning. If you lose games, you want to start winning again.
“Do we lose confidence? I cannot see it yet, because every single game we’ve lost, we were able to create in the second half an unbelievable amount of chances.
“If you look at the three games we lost in the Premier League, if you put all the highlights behind each other, you would say it is hardly possible that they lose this game.
“So, if we can keep producing what we are doing and do a few things a little bit better, then there is every reason to expect that we start to win football games again.”
