Premier League: Chelsea edge Tottenham as relegation battle heads for dramatic final day

Chelsea kept their season alive and pushed Tottenham deeper into trouble after a tense 2-1 Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, May 19.

Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos sealed the points in a London derby that leaves Spurs’ Premier League survival hanging in the balance on the final day.

With both teams still chasing important targets at opposite ends of the table, the pressure was clear from the opening whistle.

Chelsea were hoping to keep their European hopes alive, while Tottenham knew a positive result could ease their relegation fears.

Fernandez strikes first

Chelsea made the stronger start and took the lead after 18 minutes.

Fernandez found space outside the area and fired a superb effort beyond the goalkeeper to put the hosts ahead. It was a goal that lifted Stamford Bridge and gave Chelsea control of the contest.

Tottenham had opportunities of their own and created several dangerous moments going forward, but they struggled to make them count.

Despite producing chances and threatening Chelsea at times, the visitors again looked vulnerable in key moments.

Chelsea continued to look dangerous and almost added a second before the break as they looked to take advantage of Spurs’ uncertainty at the back.

Santos doubles Chelsea advantage

The second goal arrived midway through the second half, and it came from Santos.

Fernandez turned creator this time, setting up the Brazilian midfielder to finish from close range and put Chelsea firmly in charge.

Tottenham refused to give up and eventually found a route back into the match.

Richarlison pulled a goal back in the 74th minute after good work from Pape Sarr, giving the visitors hope of a late comeback.

Survival fight goes to the wire

Spurs pushed forward in the closing stages, but Chelsea held on to secure a much-needed victory.

The result ended a poor league run for the Blues and moved them closer to a possible European place.

For Tottenham, however, the defeat means the tension continues. Their fate will now be decided on the final day, with their top-flight status still not completely secure.

One more match now stands between Spurs and a deeply worrying end to the season.
