Red Bull driver Max Verstappen will be competing in the Nurburgring 24-Hours endurance race in May.

The four-time F1 world champion, 28, has described this as a “bucket list” event for his racing career.

Verstappen’s love for sportscar racing

Few Formula One drivers have an interest in other forms of racing outside of their own sport.

Verstappen, though, is someone who has had an interest in the sportscar class for a while.

The Dutchman has repeatedly brought up his wish to compete in the pantheon of motorsport events, the Le Mans 24-Hours, specifically in the now-dubbed Hypercar class.

This is where the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin and Cadillac currently compete.

Now, the champ is getting to tick off one of his dream races.

He will compete in the Nurburgring 24-Hours endurance race behind the wheel of a Mercedes AMG GT car, branded in Red Bull colours.

How this came about

In September of last year, the Dutch driver earned his DMSB Permit Nordschelife Grade A license, enabling him to compete in GT3 machinery.

He went on to win his debut race in the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) in a GT3 car.

Now he will drive the AMG GT car at the 24-hour race alongside Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon, and Lucas Auer.

What is the Nurburgring 24-Hours?

This prestigious endurance race is set around the iconic 15.8-mile circuit in the Eifel mountains in Germany, which is the longest permanent race track in the world.

The Nurburgring is also regarded as one of the more dangerous tracks to race on.

Dubbed by the drivers as “the green hell”, it is known for its steep elevation changes and minimal runoff area.

Max Verstappen told BBC Sport, “The Nurburgring Nordschleife is a special place. There’s no other track like it.

“The 24 hours of Nurburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now.”

The multi-class race features a wide variety of cars from top-tier GT3 and GT4 cars to almost production-like touring cars.

In 2025, 141 cars competed on the same bit of tarmac.
