Premier League: Five talking points from Liverpool’s pre-season win over Sunderland

A new era at Liverpool began with encouraging signs as Andoni Iraola oversaw a 4-2 pre-season victory over Sunderland in his first match in charge at the weekend.

While pre-season results should always be taken with caution, the performance offered supporters an early glimpse of the Spaniard’s high-intensity philosophy and the direction he hopes to take the Reds this season.

Federico Chiesa impressed with a goal and an assist, academy prospects seized their opportunities and Liverpool’s attacking intent was evident throughout.

However, Joe Gomez’s early injury served as a reminder that challenges remain.

Here are the five biggest talking points from Liverpool’s opening pre-season fixture.

Attacking foot forward

One of the clearest takeaways from Iraola’s first game in charge was Liverpool’s attacking intent.

From the opening whistle, the Reds looked to move the ball forward quickly, press aggressively when possession was lost and create chances through direct, vertical play.

While there were naturally moments where the team’s cohesion was lacking, Liverpool looked dangerous whenever they attacked, seamlessly implementing Iraola’s philosophy into their play.

The movement in the final third was fluid, with players frequently rotating positions and looking to exploit space behind Sunderland’s defence.

It is far too early to judge how successfully Iraola’s ideas have been implemented, particularly after only a handful of training sessions.

However, the attacking patterns on display suggested Liverpool supporters can expect a more front-foot, high-energy style as pre-season progresses.

If this opening performance is anything to go by, the Reds will aim to entertain as much as they compete under their new head coach.

Chiesa steals the show

Chiesa was undoubtedly Liverpool’s standout performer, producing a display that delighted both Iraola and the Anfield faithful.

The Italian forward capped off an energetic performance with a goal and an assist, constantly troubling Sunderland’s backline with his pace, movement and willingness to drive at defenders.

After an injury-disrupted first season at the club, Chiesa looked sharp and full of confidence, thriving in Liverpool’s fluid attacking system.

Whether drifting inside from a wide position or finding pockets of space between the lines, he was at the heart of many of the Reds’ most dangerous attacks.

With Liverpool entering a new era under Iraola, Chiesa has the opportunity to establish himself as a key figure in the squad.

If he can maintain his fitness and build on performances like this, the 28-year-old could finally deliver on the promise that prompted the Reds to bring him to Merseyside.

Young guns impress

Pre-season is often the perfect stage for academy players to make their case, and several of Liverpool’s youngsters seized the opportunity against Sunderland.

With a number of senior internationals still unavailable, Iraola handed valuable minutes to emerging talents, who responded with composed and energetic performances.

Kieran Morrison was among the standout youngsters, finding the back of the net and continuing to showcase the attacking quality that has made him one of the academy’s brightest prospects.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s younger players displayed confidence in possession, worked tirelessly out of possession and looked comfortable adapting to Iraola’s high-intensity approach.

While it remains to be seen how many will feature regularly once the full squad returns, the performance served as a reminder of the strength of Liverpool’s academy.

More importantly, it suggested that Iraola is willing to reward young players who can match the intensity and demands of his system.

Gomez injury concerns

The only major blemish on an otherwise encouraging afternoon came just minutes into the match as Gomez was forced off through injury.

The defender was pulled off the pitch early and was unable to continue, raising immediate concerns for both Iraola and Liverpool supporters.

Although the full extent of the issue remains unclear, Gomez’s withdrawal is far from ideal given his importance to the squad’s defensive depth.

His versatility across the backline has made him a valuable asset in recent seasons, and any extended spell on the sidelines would leave Liverpool with fewer experienced options heading into the new campaign.

Iraola will be hoping the injury proves nothing more than a minor setback, but it was a timely reminder that pre-season is as much about avoiding fitness concerns as it is about building momentum.

With tougher tests still to come, Liverpool will be eager to have Gomez back as soon as possible.

A strong foundation

No one at Liverpool is getting carried away after a single pre-season victory, least of all Iraola himself.

While the 4-2 win over Sunderland offered encouraging glimpses of the Spaniard’s high-intensity philosophy, the new head coach stressed that it is only the beginning of a much longer process.

Iraola said after the match in a Liverpool press conference: “It will give us a good starting point to improve things.

“A lot of things to correct, obviously – it’s the first day.

“You could feel the heavy legs, the players have been training. So, we lacked some freshness.”

Implementing a new tactical identity takes time, particularly one that demands relentless pressing, quick transitions and high physical output.

If the performance against Sunderland proved anything, it is that the foundations are already being laid, but consistency will only come through repetition on the training ground and further match experience.

There is clear buy-in from the players, encouraging signs in possession and plenty of room for growth, making this an ideal platform for Liverpool to continue building ahead of the Premier League campaign.
