Fernando Alonso’s contract ends in 2026, and despite rumours of retirement, the two-time world champion is eager to continue in the sport.
The 44-year-old Spaniard holds the record for the longest F1 career in history, covering over two decades and 400+ race starts.
Currently at Aston Martin and contracted until 2026, Alonso’s retirement has long been a topic of conversation for the end of this year.
The speculation has only increased considering Aston Martin’s abysmal start to the 2026 season.

Alonso’s view
Having raced since the age of three, Alonso retains the same fire, saying in an interview during the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco: “I love what I do. I love racing.
“The moment I have to stop racing, it will be a very hard decision and difficult to accept.”
Speaking on his future in the sport, Alonso added: “The time will tell. I will feel it. At the moment, I don’t feel it is that time yet.
“I feel competitive, I feel motivated, I feel happy when I drive. So, yeah, hopefully not the last season.”
Alonso’s future
With Aston Martin’s current poor performance, a contract renewal with Aston Martin looks like a plausible future.
The team needs someone with experience to help the team understand and improve the car, and Alonso certainly has that.
Aston Martin are also unlikely to have many drivers of or near Alonso’s calibre lining up wanting to take his seat.
For now, Alonso’s words are clear: retirement can wait, because his hunger to race is still very much alive – as is his team’s need for him.
