F1 news: Max Verstappen signs Red Bull contract extension until 2030

Max Verstappen has committed his Formula 1 future to Red Bull Racing after signing a new contract extension that will keep him with the team until at least the end of the 2030 season.

The four-time world champion’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of 2028, while speculation had surrounded his future throughout the 2026 season.

Verstappen’s management had reportedly held talks with McLaren over a potential move for 2027, while the Dutchman also had an exit clause that could have allowed him to leave Red Bull under certain championship circumstances.

However, the 28-year-old has now opted to remain with the team that has been his home since 2016.

The Flying Dutchman’s thoughts

“I am really pleased with the contract extension. We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again,” Verstappen said on Sky Sports.

The decision comes after a difficult start to the 2026 season for Red Bull.

The team struggled for pace during the opening stages of the campaign, leaving Verstappen outside the championship fight and prompting questions about whether he would remain beyond 2026.

Red Bull has since made progress with its car and reliability, with Verstappen securing podium finishes in the two races immediately before the summer break.

Verstappen has also emphasised the strong relationship he shares with Red Bull, having won all four of his world championships with the team.

The newly extended driver said: “I have always said it: The team is like a second family for me and I feel very at home.

“I came to the team hoping to be able to win races. What we went on to achieve together has been simply lovely and we have shared many incredible moments and won four World Championships.

“To continue this journey with the same team that I have been with my whole career is really special and something I have always wanted to do.”

Professional opinions

Sky Sports F1 analyst, Karun Chandhok, suggested that recent improvements may have convinced the Dutchman to stay.

“He wanted to see improvements,” Chandhok said, pointing to Red Bull’s progress and its development of its own power unit.

The analyst continued: “Making their own engine at Red Bull is incredible stuff where you think where they have come from.

“He wanted to see improvement on the power unit side of things, he wanted to see improvements from the team, and I feel like from where they started the season to where they are now.

If you look at that trajectory, that is probably what he is buying into.”

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies welcomed the decision, describing Verstappen’s continued presence as significant for both the team and Formula 1.

“Having Max continue with us and retaining the best driver on the grid is fantastic news for everyone at Red Bull, Oracle Red Bull Racing, as well as F1 and motorsport as a whole,” Mekies said.

Continuing to admire the Dutchman, Mekies added: “His impact on our team and on Red Bull’s motorsport story has been transformational, and he has been fundamental to everything we have accomplished together.”

The contract extension also brings an end to much of the speculation surrounding the 2027 driver market.

With Verstappen now committed to Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren are set to retain their current driver line-ups, while attention will turn to the remaining vacancies across the grid.

What the future looks like

Verstappen will now head into his home Dutch Grand Prix knowing his long-term future is settled, as he looks to help Red Bull return to championship-winning form.

With the new deal keeping him at the team until he is 33, Verstappen has made a significant commitment to the Red Bull project and will have the opportunity to build on a partnership that has already delivered four world titles.

The extension also gives Red Bull greater stability as it continues to develop its own power unit for the new-generation regulations, with Verstappen’s experience likely to be central to the team’s long-term ambitions.

For Verstappen, remaining with Red Bull provides an opportunity to become an even more defining figure in the team’s history.

The Dutchman could potentially add to his four world championships and strengthen his legacy with the outfit.
