Formula One heads to the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya this weekend for the seventh round of the 2026 season, a true test made for the competitiveness of the sport.

With a variation of high speed corners, long straights, technical medium speed sections and heavy braking, the venue is set to bring action from all fronts.

Race recap

The 2025 Barcelona GP had Oscar Piastri take that first place position last year in Barcelona.

He converted pole position into a dominant, controlled victory to solidify his position as the front runner.

In second place was McLaren team-mate, Lando Norris.

He fought back from a sluggish start to secure a 1-2 finish for the Papaya team.

In third place and to complete the driver podium was Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.

He capitalised on the late race chaos to inherit the final podium place on Sunday.

Can anyone stop Mercedes?

Mercedes arrive in Spain with all the cards in their favour.

The Silver Arrows team have won every race this season, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli holding the record for five of the six races.

The young Italian has emerged as the standout performer of the season in Monaco as he heads to Barcelona with a significant point advantage over team-mate George Russell.

The track should suit the Mercedes package as it rewards aerodynamic efficiency and balance rather than straight line speed which are areas where Mercedes has outperformed throughout the season.

Ferrari’s redemption

While the Scuderia Ferrari Formula One team have shown strong one lap pace, the challenge arises from transforming that speed into regular race wins.

Barcelona may play into Ferrari’s aerodynamic strengths as the package targets front wing air flow management which should ensure car balance.

McLaren and Red Bull seek explanations

McLaren and Red Bull have shown aspects of competitiveness but it has not been enough to be able to challenge the Mercedes machinery.

Both teams are struggling with reliability issues and overall speed across the different Formula One tracks that have been featured on the calendar so far.

Both teams will be focusing on finding solutions to their current weaknesses that are preventing them from challenging the Mercedes team.

What will the weekend bring?

Practice could be more important than ever.

Historically, Barcelona has been known as a testing ground for Formula One.

Now F1 cars are required to find the full package of their cars this weekend.

Here are the top three predictions for the 2026 Barcelona GP:

Pole position: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)

Antonelli has been extraordinary over one lap pace this season as he continues to deliver when it matters most.

Mercedes has locked out every pole position this season, with Antonelli having an advantage of four over two to his team-mate Russell.

This makes the Italian the favourite heading into Saturday.

Race predictions

1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)

Mercedes have been consistent, securing their dominance so far this season.

The track specifications in Barcelona should suit their car and play in their favour.

Antonelli looks increasingly comfortable in the car, carrying the pressure to continuously perform to possibly achieve his first championship in Formula One.

2. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)

Hamilton has been generating his strongest weekends with Ferrari this year.

The seven-time world champion has been improving in pace, putting him in contention to aim for a podium this weekend.

3. George Russell (Mercedes)

If Russell is able to put everything together this weekend, it is possible to achieve his 27th podium finish in Barcelona and possibly close the gap to his team-mate, Antonelli.

Barcelona often provides the clearest indication of Formula 1’s competitive hierarchy, and all signs point towards Mercedes keeping their momentum for the 2026 season.

Antonelli has the characteristics to add another win to his record.
