Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli announced himself on the biggest stage with a stunning maiden Formula 1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, beating team-mate George Russell in a tense and dramatic race.
The 18-year-old, already tipped as one of the sport’s brightest prospects, delivered a composed and mature performance to secure his first win in F1.
Despite losing the lead to the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton at the start of the race, Antonelli quickly regained it, and managed the race with confidence beyond his years.
He became the second-youngest race winner in F1 history.
It also marked a significant moment for Mercedes, who celebrated their second one-two finish of the season.
Wolff vindicated after early criticism
Team principal Toto Wolff was criticised for bringing Antonelli into Mercedes at the time that he did.
However, after an up and down season, the Austrian’s decision is finally looking to be the right one.
“It is rare I am overwhelmed, but I am at the moment,” said Wolff to Sky Sports F1.
“The win has maybe come earlier than I expected. Last year we said that it’s going to be a very difficult year with many ups and downs and mistakes.
“Then, bang, second race. He has controlled it in the front, he has driven very well today, so he’s probably a little bit better than the trajectory I thought.
“He was actually quite calm and jovial before the race but then, on the grid, you see the eyes.”

Hamilton shines in podium battle
Behind them, Lewis Hamilton completed the podium after a solid drive.
The seven-time world champion gave former team-mate Russell a hard time, and battled hard with current team-mate Charles Leclerc for the final podium place throughout the race.
The former Mercedes star has looked more alive this season with a Ferrari that looks promising.
“I had so much fun. We had a great start. I wasn’t able to keep these guys behind, but to stay in the fight, it was one of the most enjoyable races that I’ve had in a long, long time, if ever,” Hamilton said.
“The fact that the cars are the way they are this year…that battle with Charles [Leclerc] at the end was awesome.
“Great wheel-to-wheel battle, very fair, and just what we want. We’ve got to keep pushing.
“I think there was one moment we did touch but it was subtle, just a kiss, so it’s ok. But that’s what it’s about, it’s about tough racing.”
Exciting season ahead
Despite Mercedes having the upper hand, Ferrari are close behind and already showing strong race pace.
With both teams pushing and battling as they are, the 2026 F1 season is shaping up to deliver an exciting title fight on both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ fronts.
