The NBA play-offs are weeks away, and the gap between genuine contenders and hopeful pretenders is finally starting to show.

This list will go over some of the realistic contenders, those squads that have the talent and form to survive four brutal play-off rounds.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors just miss the cut, whilst these eight still have a genuine path to glory ahead of them.

8. Houston Rockets

Title odds: 25/1

Conference odds: 14/1

Houston’s season has been exciting – young, athletic and sprinkled with quality and experience.

They’ve been a defensive force in the Western Conference, ranking first in team rebounds (48.4) and amongst the top in opponent points allowed, blocks and three-point percentage allowed.

Kevin Durant leads the scoring at 25.8 points per game, but Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson have been standout contributors.

Both 23, they’ve solidified the Rockets’ defence all season.

Experience is the main concern as play-off basketball is different, and Houston could struggle against higher-ranked teams.

Still, they’ll make opponents uncomfortable.

My take: Could be dangerous in the first round, but offensive limitations likely cap them at the second round.

7. New York Knicks

Title odds: 16/1

Conference odds: 17/4

It has been a chaotic season for the Knicks – they’re well-rounded but sometimes lack offensive rhythm.

Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns provide high-level scoring and rebounding, a duo any team would value.

Recent struggles were clear against Cleveland, though, when the Knicks hit just 10/37 from three.

Opposing teams trapping Brunson has definitely limited his impact in games of late.

Madison Square Garden remains a potential play-off advantage, but offensive inefficiency makes them vulnerable against the league’s best teams.

My take: Capable of a deep run if their offence clicks but may struggle in a seven-game series against top-tier opponents.

6. Cleveland Cavaliers

Title odds: 11/1

Conference odds: 3/1 (favourite)

Cleveland’s form since James Harden joined has been impressive.

Donovan Mitchell and Harden together form a guard partnership capable of winning the championship.

However, the offence can at times lean too heavily on these guards, and scoring drops against switch-heavy defences.

The Cavs rank fifth in three-point attempts per game – that volume is promising, but slow, contested possessions reduce efficiency.

Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley provide points and defensive impact, but heavy guard reliance could be a play-off concern.

My take: Strong contender in the East and a good chance of reaching the conference finals, but winning the championship would require the guards to carry them past the Western elite.

5. Boston Celtics

Title odds: 12/1

Conference odds: 13/4

Boston continue to perform despite losing Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday and with Jayson Tatum sidelined long-term.

Coach Joe Mazzulla has managed rotations impressively, with Jaylen Brown leading the way, averaging 29.1 points per game.

The team shows depth across starters and their bench, plus that classic Celtics grit always keeps them competitive.

However, their recent loss to Denver exposed inconsistencies – their defence remains strong, but the offence has dipped.

Three-point efficiency has fallen under pressure, especially against top Western Conference teams.

The looming return of Tatum makes them legitimate title contenders, but how he’ll perform coming back from such an injury remains unknown.

My take: A returning Tatum makes them hard to predict, so the conference finals are realistic, but beating Cleveland or Detroit will be tough.

4. Detroit Pistons

Title odds: 12/1

Conference odds: 13/4

Detroit’s turnaround has been remarkable as they are now one of the best sides in the east in both offence and defence.

Sitting first in the east with a record of 43-14, star player Cade Cunningham is having a standout year, averaging 25.4 points and 9.8 assists per game.

The Pistons control games through balanced scoring and efficient defence.

Transition opportunities are limited for opponents, and team chemistry is strong, but in tight games, scoring often comes from contested jumpers and second-chance opportunities.

The style that works in the regular season may be exposed in the play-offs.

My take: Likely to reach the conference finals, but inexperience may hold them back against an on-form Boston or Cleveland side, never mind the big three of the west, so a title feels out of reach.

3. Denver Nuggets

Title odds: 5/1

Conference odds: 7/2

Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets remain formidable, ranking first in points per game and three-point percentage and second in field-goal percentage.

Defensively, Denver has tightened up recently, with the win over Boston highlighting their two-way efficiency.

Jokic averages 28.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 10.4 assists per outing, dominating nearly every game.

Play-off experience for the 2023 champions gives Denver an edge.

And while injuries have limited their best five from playing together, their efficiency at both ends still makes them one of the league’s top teams.

My take: A championship contender and likely to reach the conference finals but could fall short against OKC or the Spurs.

2. San Antonio Spurs

Title odds: 10/1

Conference odds: 11/2

The Spurs are one of the league’s most complete teams – they sit second in the competitive Western Conference with a 42-16 record.

Victor Wembanyama is the cornerstone, showcasing incredible defence and expanding his offensive skill set.

His ability to stretch the court paired with mid-range game and pick-and-pop threes leave opposing big men scrambling.

Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox also provide great offensive balance through the team.

A deep rotation and strong defensive identity make them a tough matchup in the play-offs, with their efficiency and team chemistry giving them a shot at the Conference Finals.

My take: Perhaps the best value pick, they have already shown they can beat OKC and challenge for the Finals if they maintain form and health.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder

Title odds: 13/10 (favourite)

Conference odds: 5/6 (favourite)

The Thunder have been favourites since before the season began.

Last year’s champions started fast, and despite some dip in form, they remain atop the Western Conference.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander carries the scoring load with 31.8 points per game and efficient playmaking.

Chet Holmgren adds interior defence and secondary scoring, while Jalen Williams provides floor spacing and ball movement.

OKC’s depth ensures the bench maintains leads when starters rest – crucial in play-off series.

Their balance, defence and star power make them the league’s most complete title contender.

My take: Clear championship favourites, although last season’s play-off struggles show nothing is guaranteed. Balance, depth and star power still make them the team to beat.
