Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea are preparing for their must-win trip to Naples on Wednesday night in their bid to finish in the top eight of the Champions League table.

The last time these two teams met was in the Round of 16 stage of the 2011/2012 season, where the Blues fought back in the home second leg to overcome a 3-1 deficit from the reverse fixture.

So, where is Roberto Di Matteo’s squad now?

Petr Cech, retired

An obvious start to this list, Petr Cech is a legend at Stamford Bridge.

The Czechia international continued his tenure in West London until 2015, where he added a Europa League, an FA Cup, a League Cup and a Premier League title before departing.

Cech spent four years with rivals Arsenal, before retiring in 2019 and becoming a technical and performance advisor for Chelsea between June 2019 and June 2022.

Branislav Ivanovic, retired

Branislav Ivanovic played a huge role in the comeback against Napoli, scoring the winning goal in extra time and winning the penalty to level up the tie before that.

The Serb continued his Chelsea career for five more years before departing in February 2017 for Zenit St. Petersburg.

Ivanovic returned to England in 2020 with West Brom, with whom he returned to Stamford Bridge and retired at the end of the 2020/2021 season.

The Brazilian joined Arsenal in 2019 for two years, before spending some time in his home country at Flamengo and Fortaleza.

Luiz is now at Cypriot side Pafos FC, with whom he returned to Chelsea in their last Champions League match, but was an unused substitute.

John Terry, part-time youth mentor at Chelsea

Chelsea’s captain for so many years, John Terry had an imperious career at Stamford Bridge which lasted until 2017.

The Englishman joined Aston Villa that summer on a free transfer, before retiring from professional football in 2018.

Terry joined Dean Smith’s coaching set-up at Villa Park, helping them achieve promotion before moving to Leicester City as an assistant coach in 2023, and is now a part-time mentor for Chelsea’s academy players.

Ashley Cole, pathway coach at the FA

Ashley Cole enjoyed a decorated career at Chelsea, which lasted eight years in total between 2006 and 2014.

The left-back went on to play for Roma and La Galaxy, before returning to England with Derby County in 2019.

Cole now spends his time as an England youth pathway coach and has helped Lee Carsley coach the under-21 side, after his time as a first-team coach at Birmingham City.

Michael Essien, assistant coach at Nordsjaelland

After being a part of the Champions League winning squad, Michael Essien joined Real Madrid on loan in 2012, before returning with the Blues for nine more appearances.

The Ghanaian joined AC Milan in 2014, and retired at the Azerbaijanian outfit Sabail.

Essien is now working as an assistant coach at the Danish Superliga side Nordsjaelland, a position he has held since 2020.

Frank Lampard, Coventry City manager

Frank Lampard continued his career at Stamford Bridge until 2014, before leaving to New York City FC where he was loaned to Manchester City.

The Englishman retired from professional football in 2016, before beginning his coaching career with Derby County.

Lampard had two tenures as Chelsea manager either side of his time at Everton, and is now leading Coventry City to a possible return to the Premier League.
