Former Australia coach Justin Langer says he “hasn’t heard from anyone” at the ECB over the vacant head coach role for England’s Test team.
Brendon McCullum was relieved of his red-ball duties after a home series defeat to New Zealand followed the embarrassing 4-1 Ashes defeat Down Under.
Ex-England coach Andy Flower then ruled himself out of the running for a return to the role, leaving Langer and former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff as the main contenders.
However, Langer’s Australian roots make him an unlikely appointment for the ECB, especially with a home Ashes series on English soil in 2027.
Passionate about cricket
The Manchester Super Giants coach admits he is interested in the job, saying on the Stick to Cricket podcast: “There’s three [big] coaching roles in the world – the Australian head coach, the Indian head coach and the England head coach.
“But it’s all hypothetical, isn’t it?
“I’m passionate about the game of cricket but mainly about Test cricket.
“I haven’t heard from anyone.
“It’s all paper talk.”
When opportunity knocks
Flintoff would be a more popular appointment with England fans than 55-year-old Langer, who insists he is open to all coaching opportunities.
He added: “I think, with world cricket, it’s so global.
“It’s so different.
“I’d never have dreamed I’d be coaching franchise cricket.
“I never dreamed I’d coach Australia.
“When it comes to coaching, it’s a career and everyone looks at all opportunities, don’t they?”
