England qualified for the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals with a gutsy 3-2 victory over Mexico at a boisterous Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Elsewhere in the round of 16, Norway stunned Brazil 2-1, France scraped past Paraguay 1-0 and Morocco outplayed Canada 3-0.
And completing the last-32 action earlier in the weekend, Egypt triumphed 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Australia, Argentina knocked out tournament debutants Cape Verde 3-2 and Colombia beat Ghana 1-0.
England overcome Mexico
Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty proved too much for co-hosts Mexico, who nevertheless fought back through strikes by Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez.
The Three Lions also had right-back Jarell Quansah sent off in the 54th minute, making the result all the more sweeter in Mexico City.
“Very proud. We needed everything. It was super difficult,” England head coach Thomas Tuchel told Sky Sports.
“In the moments we thought we had caught the momentum, we had setbacks. That is proper mentality.
“This team really mean it. When the going gets tough, they never give up, they never lose belief. It was one step more.
“We need to take this in. This is Azteca, it’s Mexico, a crazy game. We left everything out there, every single one of us.
“We need to take this in – now it’s full steam ahead.”
Speaking to the BBC, Kane said: “So many heroes out there.
“I spoke after the last game about hero moments, but the whole team were heroes here.
“This was one of my favourite nights in my career.”

Norway stun Brazil
Erling Haaland scored a sublime double as Norway dumped five-time winners Brazil out of the World Cup, with Neymar grabbing a late penalty consolation for Carlo Ancelotti’s side in New Jersey.
“I said to the boys that I don’t think it’s 50-50, but we have a fair chance if we play at our best and have match-winners, and we had that,” Norway boss Ståle Solbakken admitted to the media post-match.
“The whole nation is rowing together, and with that, I mean that we are having a great party here and in Oslo and in all the other big and small cities all the way through Norway.
“The rowing is in a way a symbol of that and that we are all together. So I think it’s great days, it’s a great summer to be a fan – I think it’s better to be a fan than a coach.”
Haaland added: “This is just an insane day. It is one of the most insane days in Norwegian history.”

France edge Paraguay
A 70th-minute spot-kick from Kylian Mbappé was enough to see 2018 winners and 2022 runners-up France advance past a brutal Paraguay team in Philadelphia.
“We knew what kind of match to expect. I think it was really good for us to experience a game like that and to see how we handled it,” Mbappé explained to reporters after the tight win.
“We showed that we’re not just a team capable of playing attacking football. Every team uses its own strengths – there’s no right or wrong way to play.
“The only right way is to win. Now we have to focus on Morocco. We’re really looking forward to facing them because we know they’re a very good team.”

Morocco outclass Canada
Azzedine Ounahi’s brace and a stoppage-time finish by Soufiane Rahimi ended co-hosts Canada’s tournament in Houston.
Reflecting on the loss, Canada manager Jesse Marsch said: “Across the pitch, we had 11 incredible performances in the first half. We were unlucky not to get the lead, then it was the fine details.
“What a privilege our fans have had to root for a team like this that goes after the game. We achieved tremendous success [at the World Cup].
“Of course, we would have liked to be the ones celebrating instead of them, but this is as far as we could go.
“Now it is time to build further upon what we have accomplished.”
