Liverpool dominated Newcastle while Manchester City dropped points against Tottenham on a weekend that may just have handed Arsenal the Premier League title.

The Gunners beat Leeds 4-0 at Elland Road and now find themselves six points clear at the top.

Here, Sport Just Sport writer Alex Rhodes breaks down the winners and losers from Matchday 24.

Arsenal: Winner

A dominant victory over Leeds was a welcome return to form for Arsenal.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised his team’s performance, saying: “I think the team showed a real dominance, resilience, character and then obviously quality.

“We had the moments to punish them.”

Arsenal have been criticised for lacking a goalscoring threat in recent weeks, but goals from Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyökores and Gabriel Jesus showed clear signs of improvement heading into an important phase of the season.

On Tuesday, they face a tough EFL Cup semi-final against an in-form Chelsea side whom they lead 3-2 on aggregate.

Manchester City: Loser

For the first time since April 2018, Man City failed to win a match after leading 2-0.

City controlled the first half as goals from Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo appeared to sink the hearts of the home side.

However, two goals from Dominic Solanke, including an audacious scorpion kick, levelled the score at 2-2 by the final whistle.

The result means Pep Guardiola’s win percentage at Spurs has dropped to 38%, with only his record at Liverpool (10%) being worse.

“It was a tough game,” admitted midfielder Rodri. “I think it is fair to say we deserved more.”

City are now six points behind title rivals Arsenal in a battle they are slowly losing a grip on.

Liverpool: Winner

Despite a lethargic start, Liverpool battled to an emphatic 4-1 win over the Magpies.

Summer signing Hugo Ekitike scored twice in three minutes on the stroke of halftime to put the Reds on the front foot before second-half goals from Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konaté secured all three points.

Ekitike (23) became the youngest Liverpool player to score 10 goals in a Premier League season since Michael Owen (21) in 2000/01.

This result moreover marked Liverpool’s first league win in over a month, providing crucial momentum as they chase Manchester United in fourth place.

Aston Villa: Loser

A 1-0 defeat against 10-man Brentford underlined a lacklustre performance from Aston Villa, who were looking to solidify their place in the top four.

They now trail leaders Arsenal by seven points and will be aware of the growing threat from Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool behind them.

Villa squandered numerous chances, registering 27 shots but only getting five of them on target.

VAR also ruled out what Tammy Abraham thought was an equaliser on his first Villa appearance since 2019.

Aston Villa full-back Ian Maatsen described the game as a “tough result”, adding that the team will “stay positive and focus on the next game”.

Manchester United: Winner

A dramatic 94th-minute winner from Benjamin Šeško sealed all three points for the Red Devils, continuing Michael Carrick’s perfect start as interim manager.

After relinquishing a 2-0 lead, Šeško’s late heroics provided United with their third win in a row – the first time they have achieved this feat since October.

The Slovenian said post-game: “Scoring the winner at home is unbelievable. I have been dreaming about it. We are on a really great run.”

Fulham’s Raúl Jiménez, meanwhile, scored a penalty and now boasts the best 100% penalty record in Premier League history, with 12 successful conversions, surpassing the previous record set by Yaya Touré.

West Ham: Loser

West Ham looked set for their third success on the trot, but a dominant second-half performance from Chelsea saw Enzo Fernández snatch the winning goal in stoppage time, leaving the Hammers six points adrift of safety.

Goals from Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville in the first half had put victory within reach for the visitors.

The loss of star player Lucas Paquetá earlier in the week, following his £36 million return to Flamengo in Brazil, has limited West Ham’s central attacking options, a crucial area which needs reinforcement if they are to avoid relegation.

“We should have done much better,” lamented manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

“I’m disappointed, sad, frustrated.”

They next travel to Turf Moor to face relegation-bound Burnley in a must-win match if they are to avoid the same likely fate.
