Premier League news: Arsenal fans focused on winning silverware, says Ray Parlour

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour thinks that Mikel Arteta doing a Premier League and Champions League double would be amazing – but would not be a bigger success than the Invincibles.

Ex England star Parlour played for Arsène Wenger’s Gunners who went a whole season unbeaten – in the league campaign of 2003-04 – and he thinks that may never be repeated in England.

Parlour also thinks that Arsenal fans would prefer to see their club lift a trophy than revel in a Tottenham Hotspur relegation.

Arteta’s Gunners take on Burnley at home on Monday night and have a two-point lead over Pep Guardiola’s FA Cup–winning Manchester City team with two league games remaining.

Final destination

The Londoners have also reached the Champions League final in Budapest on May 30, when they will take on Paris Saint-Germain with a chance to be crowned kings of Europe.

But during an exclusive conversation with 10bet, Parlour said:I don’t think this team would eclipse The Invincibles if they won both trophies.

“I might be totally wrong, but I don’t think they’ll ever be matched because you look at how competitive the league is now; it’s very difficult.

“All I can say is it’d be the first-ever manager to win a Champions League for Arsenal, which would be an amazing achievement.

“That was always what bugged us – the teams I played in – and it bugged Arsène as well because we knew we were a very good side, but we just didn’t conquer Europe.

“We got to quarter-finals, and there was a route where we could have gone to the semis against Leeds United in 2001, and that will always play on people’s minds who played in that era because we certainly should have won more European trophies. Definitely.”

Relegation battle

North London rivals Tottenham have had a torrid season, winning just nine of 36 league games and sitting in 17th place with two league games remaining.

They are locked in a relegation battle with West Ham, who lost 3-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday to leave them two points behind Spurs with one league game left to play.

Tottenham take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night – and Parlour believes Gunners fans are more bothered about seeing their team win silverware than seeing their rivals relegated.

He added: “Look, it’s a rivalry, but you’ve got to think about yourselves; don’t worry about what happens elsewhere.

“It’d be a disaster for Spurs, don’t get me wrong – what with the stadium and all that – but I would always say Arsenal winning the league all day long.

“It’s all about yourselves and celebrating that. Whatever happens down the bottom can sort itself out; you just worry about yourselves and make sure you win that title.

“I’m sure hopefully a lot of Arsenal fans will be in my camp there!”
