England defeated hosts Argentina 31-24 in a tense, hard-fought Nations Championship clash in Santiago del Estero on Saturday.
At a decidedly hostile Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades, with Falklands-themed banners in the crowd, the visitors dug deep to record a sixth consecutive win on Argentinian soil.
Argentina thought they had salvaged a draw when Bautista Delguy crossed the line well into stoppage time, but a TMO review dramatically ruled he had stepped into touch.
Steve Borthwick’s side had earlier built up a 19-3 half-time lead before four second-half yellow cards for Jack van Poortvliet, Alex Coles, Henry Pollock and Emmanuel Iyogun unnecessarily complicated things.
Borthwick lauds England spirit
Reflecting on the gritty victory, Borthwick said on Sky Sports: “I’m delighted for the players – they showed incredible spirit, led brilliantly by Jamie George.
“Matches between England and Argentina, whatever the sport, seem to end up being very tight late on and full of drama.
“Right now, these players deserve a fantastic holiday, a good night out and a good rest.
“They’ve worked hard and it’s been a season that’s been going a while.
“We all know about the number of minutes the English players play and these guys have stuck it right to the very end.”

Feyi-Waboso criticises ill discipline
Player of the match Immanuel Feyi-Waboso stated: “A tough-fought match right until the end. For it to finish like that was very dramatic.
“Argentina – their passion, the fans, the atmosphere was amazing.”
And with England having now racked up 14 sin-bins in their last eight Test matches, he added: “Obviously, discipline wasn’t great from us, but we managed to see out the victory in the end.
“Our discipline makes it very hard to win.”
