Formula 1 heads to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this weekend for Round 7 of the 2026 season, and while Barcelona is known for being a true test of car performance, there are plenty of fascinating storylines heading into the race weekend.
Fernando Alonso’s farewell to Barcelona
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has hinted that this may be his final Formula One appearance at Barcelona, with the circuit set to lose its spot as the primary Spanish circuit.
For Spanish fans, this weekend could be an emotional experience as they get the opportunity to celebrate the country’s sporting icon at his home race.
“It’s going to be a special weekend. This is probably my last Barcelona race in Formula 1, so I want to say thanks to everyone. I will try to enjoy the weekend,” Alonso told the F1 app.

Lewis Hamilton’s search for Ferrari glory
Lewis Hamilton stays in pursuit of his first victory for the most iconic team in Formula One, Scuderia Ferrari.
The seven-time world champion has shown great improvement from his first year in Ferrari.
His 2025 seasonal run was nothing short of disappointing as Hamilton struggled to come to terms with the car while not being able to obtain a race podium all season.
In his second season with Ferrari, there has been a complete switch up.
He has the opportunity to gain a third consecutive podium in Barcelona this weekend.

Spanish fans have the pick of the crop as they cheer for both Alonso and Carlos Sainz racing on home soil.
Home races often produce special moments, and both drivers will be desperate to deliver a memorable result in front of their passionate supporters.

Piastri won the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona by converting a dominant pole position into a lights-to-flag victory, leading McLaren to a 1-2 finish.
If McLaren are able to find their momentum and discover their pace, it is possible to secure a top five spot and maybe even podium
Battle to watch for
Antonelli vs Hamilton
Beside his team-mate George Russell, Hamilton has been Antonelli’s closest challenger for the Formula One season so far and continues to hunt for his first Ferrari victory.
If Ferrari can find a bit more pace this weekend, this could be a defining battle for the summer leg of the season.
Bold prediction
George Russell takes pole, Antonelli wins the race.
Barcelona often rewards strong qualifying pace, and Russell could have the speed to grab Saturday’s headlines.
But on Sunday, Antonelli’s consistency and Mercedes’ race execution will prove decisive once again, extending the team’s perfect start to the 2026 season.
