The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix saw George Russell lose out on the win to his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, increasing the points gap between the two in the championship.
Russell won the opening Grand Prix of the season but has since been beaten by his team-mate in the following four rounds consecutively, giving Antonelli a 43-point lead.
With talk about the championship growing louder as the gap grows, the Mercedes pair each spoke to Sky Sports F1 about their performances and their take on the battle.

Russell frustration
Speaking explicitly on the title battle, Russell told Sky Italy that “it feels like it is [Antonelli’s championship] to lose now”.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Russell believes he has found himself in this position because he “can’t seem to catch a break”.
About his performance in Canada, Russell said: “I’m proud of my weekend. Pole in the Sprint, won the Sprint, pole in Qualifying, I was leading when I stopped. I had a good battle with Kimi.
“I don’t feel like there was anything more I could have done this weekend. I will leave satisfied. I’m pretty damn frustrated with what happened but what more can I do?”
Russell continued to speak on several events from the season so far where he believed “lady luck” was not on his side, including safety cars, red flags, and mechanical issues.
He concluded by saying: “I don’t wish any bad luck on anybody. I just want to fight hard and fight fair. We have equal opportunity but right now lady luck is not on my side.”
Antonelli taking nothing for granted
Antonelli seemed more reserved about his lead in the championship, stating that the gap “doesn’t mean that I can relax and just take it easier. Instead, I need to keep raising the bar because it’s not going to be easy. Competitors are getting closer.”
He claimed that he isn’t thinking about the championship overall and is taking it one race at a time and focusing on himself, as “George is super, super quick”.
Antonelli summarised by stating: “I’m just going to focus on myself, enjoy the driving and try to drive as fast as possible.”
With Antonelli extending his advantage and Russell left searching for a change in fortune, Mercedes’ intra-team title battle is quickly becoming the defining story of the 2026 F1 season.
