Kimi Antonelli fought back from 19th on the starting grid to win Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza ahead of Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
Antonelli charged through the field either side of a red-flag stoppage caused by Charles Leclerc’s crash, using both strategy and pace to close in on the front of the race.
The result marked the 20-year-old’s seventh triumph of an impressive season and stretched his lead in the Drivers’ Championship standings to 66 over Russell and 76 over Lewis Hamilton.
Antonelli recounts Monza win
Following a famous victory, Antonelli said on Sky Sports: “After the red flag, I was already P12 and I had another start.
“After another couple of laps, I was already in the top five and I knew I could have a shot for the win.
“Of course, it was very difficult to break away, but we managed to pull it off and bring it home.”

Wolff unsurprised by result
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, meanwhile, stated: “I thought one of the two [Mercedes drivers] is going to win.
“Either George because he was on pole [for the restart] or Kimi because he’s going to walk over water in Monza.”
Wolff added on Antonelli: “I knew that that was his mission: to win the race.
“I chatted with his father [on Saturday] – the father also saw that coming.
“These are the moments where you can see how a weekend is panning out through the sessions, that a special moment could come.
“It’s still a mechanical sport, so it can change quickly.”

Rosberg labels performance ‘perfection’
Former F1 world champion Nico Rosberg was likewise complimentary of the young Italian, saying: “We have to say the race that he drove – the first lap, the second start – everything was to perfection.
“The speed he had, how he was managing everything. You cannot do it better.
“He’s in his second season in F1. He just turned 20.
“Who does that like that? It’s just unheard of.”
