Dominik Szoboszlai has committed his long-term future to Liverpool after signing a new five-year contract with the club.
The Hungarian international’s previous deal was due to expire in 2028, but the fresh agreement keeps him at Anfield until the summer of 2031.
Negotiations had reportedly been ongoing since late 2025, with Liverpool finally reaching an agreement with the midfielder’s representatives earlier this month.
Securing the future of one of the club’s most influential players will come as a significant boost for supporters ahead of the new campaign.
Szoboszlai emerged as one of the Reds’ standout performers in an otherwise disappointing campaign, earning the club’s Player of the Season award for his efforts.
Szoboszlai wants to win everything at Liverpool
By extending his stay, Szoboszlai is set to become one of the cornerstones of Liverpool’s next era as the club continues its transition beyond the Klopp and Slot years.
“I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can,” Szoboszlai told the club’s official website.
“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country… I’m ready to go for it.”
Liverpool’s decision to reward the 25-year-old with a long-term contract reflects both his importance to the squad and the club’s confidence in his future.
Szoboszlai established himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders last season, contributing 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, playing a pivotal role in securing Champions League qualification.
Allowing a player of his quality to edge closer to the final years of his contract would have been a significant risk and another saga the club could not afford.
The club only recently lost Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free after failing to negotiate a contract extension, just 12 months after Trent Alexander-Arnold departed for the Spanish giants under similar circumstances.
This extension demonstrates Liverpool’s determination to retain the core of their squad while matching the ambition of one of their brightest stars.

Potential vice-captain and eventual captain?
Szoboszlai’s new deal is also likely to fuel speculation that he could inherit Liverpool’s vice-captaincy following Andy Robertson’s departure to Tottenham earlier this summer.
The club are yet to announce Robertson’s successor, but Szoboszlai appears to be among the leading candidates.
Already captain of Hungary, the midfielder has repeatedly demonstrated leadership qualities on and off the pitch, making him a natural contender for a greater leadership role at Anfield.
Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez are also experienced options.
However, both are entering the final year of their contracts, making Liverpool’s long-term leadership planning increasingly important.
The picture becomes even more intriguing when considering captain Virgil van Dijk, whose contract is also due to expire next summer.
Whether Liverpool choose to extend the Dutch defender’s stay or begin planning for life after him remains uncertain.
Either way, Szoboszlai appears destined to become one of the club’s central leadership figures in the years ahead.
Busy summer ahead
With Szoboszlai’s future now secured, sporting director Richard Hughes can turn his attention to several other pressing priorities.
The midfielder’s contract was only one of several Liverpool must address over the coming months.
Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Rio Ngumoha, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker are all approaching the end of their current deals, leaving important decisions to be made.
Alongside those negotiations, Liverpool must also strengthen both their defence and attacking options if they are to re-establish themselves as genuine Premier League title contenders.
Having already signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna, the Reds are still in the market for another forward, a right-back, and midfielder.
With significant work still to be done in both the transfer market and the contract department, Hughes faces one of the most demanding summers of his tenure.
However, tying down one of Liverpool’s most important players is an excellent place to start.
