Netherlands and Chelsea legend Ruud Gullit expects Enzo Fernández to endure a difficult campaign at Stamford Bridge following recent controversies.
The Argentine midfielder and his international team-mates sparked outrage at World Cup 2026 when a 2-1 win over England in the semi-finals was celebrated with a banner claiming Argentina’s ownership of the Falkland Islands.
Gullit believes the incident and its ensuing backlash highlight why players should avoid political matters – and the Dutchman doubts Fernández is prepared for the inevitable hostility waiting for him on the English domestic scene.
However, despite La Liga giants Real Madrid reportedly being interested in acquiring the 25-year-old’s services, Gullit agrees with Chelsea’s stance that he should remain in London.
World Cup 2026 controversy lingers
Speaking during an exclusive interview with NY Sports Day, Gullit said of Fernández: “He is a fantastic footballer.
“But what occurred following the international match against England will make playing in English grounds very difficult for him this season.
“That controversy will linger for a long time.
“It’s precisely why footballers should avoid political disputes.”
Vital cog in Chelsea machine
Asked about the importance of Fernández to the Blues, Gullit added: “He is vital to Chelsea’s set-up.
“And [new Chelsea head coach Xabi] Alonso has made it clear he wants him at the heart of his team.
“But the key question is whether Enzo can handle the sustained hostility he’ll face away from home all season.
“I would definitely be looking to keep hold of him in London.
“He’s a fantastic player.”
