Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior on Wednesday, citing the results and performances not being up to the club’s standards as the primary reasons for initiating his departure.

Rosenior’s sacking comes in a period of five-straight league losses in which the team has gone scoreless. He leaves after less than four months in charge.

Calum McFarlane, who featured in Rosenior’s first-team coaching staff after stepping in to oversee two games after former boss Enzo Maresca’s sacking, will once again step up to the interim-manager plate to see out the rest of the season.

Club statement: ‘Results and performances not up to scratch’

“This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season,” the club statement read after Rosenior’s sacking.

“Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.

“Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as interim head coach until the end of the season with support from existing club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.

“As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”

Potential replacements

With Chelsea looking ahead to a ‘long-term appointment’ only, a slew of managers have been mentioned as potential candidates.

Sky Sports reports that Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner and Xabi Alonso are potential options in terms of their availability for next season.

Other big names include Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann, and Hansi Flick – with the club having approached them previously when the head coaching role was available.

Furthermore, Chelsea will be able to put together a comprehensive package to offer candidates, as Rosenior’s contract included a break clause, meaning the club are not required to pay out a substantial compensation fee for sacking the Englishman.
