Enzo Fernandez will feature for Chelsea against Luton Town despite continued interest from Manchester City in the Argentine midfielder.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed Fernandez’s inclusion in Thursday’s Carabao Cup second-round tie, despite Man City considering a late approach before the September 1 transfer deadline.
The midfielder has already featured in Chelsea’s opening Premier League match against Fulham, meaning Alonso is continuing to treat Fernandez as part of his plans despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Alonso confirms Fernandez involvement
Alonso was asked about Fernandez during his press conference ahead of the Luton match and made clear that the midfielder remains available for selection.
“Yes, we expect that he’s involved,” Alonso said.
“He’s trained. He’s training really well. He’s a good professional and he will be involved.
“We want to have the best team possible.”
“We know his qualities; he has shown them, and we have to wait,” he added.
“We’ll think about tomorrow and see how things develop.”

Man City interest remains alive
Man City missed a deadline imposed by Chelsea earlier this month, with the Blues demanding a bid by August 14.
No offer arrived, and Chelsea subsequently expected Fernandez to remain at Stamford Bridge for the 2026-27 season.
That position has since become less certain.
Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that Man City are considering making a bid before the transfer window closes, with Enzo Maresca remaining a major admirer of the player.
Chelsea face tense transfer finale
Man City previously had to pay Chelsea £17m compensation following Maresca’s departure, while Chelsea’s decision to impose a deadline for Fernandez demonstrated their reluctance to allow the situation to drag on.
However, with Man City still considering a substantial offer and Chelsea valuing Fernandez at £120m, the midfielder’s future remains unresolved.
For now, Alonso appears determined to use the player at his disposal.
