Premier League winners and losers: Chelsea, Tottenham suffer as Everton, Nottingham Forest celebrate

It was a dramatic weekend in the Premier League, with big results shifting the narrative at both ends of the table.

Tottenham suffered a huge blow at the hands of Nottingham Forest, falling to within one point of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Chelsea were dominated by Everton and Liverpool slumped to their 10th defeat of the season against Brighton.

Everton – Winner

A “really good season” is how David Moyes described the current campaign after Everton beat Chelsea 3-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Climbing to seventh in the league, the Toffees are now three points behind sixth-placed Chelsea, who are struggling for form.

Striker Beto became the first Everton player to score a brace at the new stadium, taking his tally to five goals in 2026.

Moyes’ side has the fifth-best form in the league, picking up 17 points from their last 10 games.

And against Chelsea, he felt that “from minute one, I think we gave them something to believe in”.

Although Everton haven’t played European football since 2017-18, this victory and a draw for rivals Brentford helped move them closer to that ambition.

Tottenham Hotspur – Loser

Thirty points from 31 games equals Tottenham’s joint-worst league campaign since 1914/15, when they were relegated to the second tier.

Spurs are now winless in 13 league games, equalling their second-worst run, which dates back to November 1912.

Their longest streak remains 16 games without a win, set in December 1934.

Manager Igor Tudor’s position is precarious, to say the least.

The Croatian is now winless in his last 10 league matches as a coach, a run stretching back to his time at Juventus.

Their next league match is on April 12, and it remains to be seen whether he will still be in charge, with Spurs sitting just one point above the relegation zone.

Sunderland – Winner

Sunderland completed the league double over Newcastle for the ninth time and the first since 2005/06.

Brian Brobbey’s 90th-minute winner was the latest recorded goal in the history of the Tyne-Wear derby as the Black Cats are now unbeaten in six away fixtures.

Régis Le Bris’ side has gained 19 points from losing positions this season, while Newcastle have dropped 22 points from winning positions.

Manager Eddie Howe admitted he “understands the criticism”.

As a result, Sunderland move ahead of Newcastle in the table and, despite some inconsistency, sit just five points off the European places.

Chelsea – Loser

Chelsea have lost four games in a row for the first time since 1993, and manager Liam Rosenior’s position is already being questioned.

The Blues have scored just three goals and conceded 12 during this run.

They have also gone three games without scoring for the first time since September 2023, despite registering 52 shots on goal.

Speculation surrounding midfielder Enzo Fernandez has not helped squad stability, with the Argentinian admitting that the departure of former manager Enzo Maresca in January “hurt” the squad.

Despite this, Rosenior insists he is “fully committed to this group and to winning here at this football club”.

After Liverpool’s loss at Brighton, Chelsea had the opportunity to move fifth, but inconsistency continues to hamper their progress as they prepare to face Manchester City next.

Nottingham Forest – Winner

A 3-0 away win against Tottenham capped a dream week for Nottingham Forest.

In midweek, they reached the Europa League quarter-finals after a penalty shootout victory against FC Midtjylland.

It made them the first English side to progress in the competition after losing the first leg at home.

A 2-0 loss for relegation rivals West Ham also helped move Vítor Pereira’s side three points clear of the drop zone after they secured their first league win since January 25.

Forest next face Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa after the international break, while the Hammers host Wolves, with both sides needing positive results in the fight for survival.

Liverpool – Loser

After a dominant 4-0 win against Galatasaray in midweek, Liverpool travelled to the south coast full of confidence.

However, a lacklustre performance allowed Brighton to capitalise.

A Danny Welbeck brace stunned the Reds, who have now lost 10 league games in a single season for the first time since 2016.

It marks just the seventh time in history that reigning top-flight champions have lost 10 games in the following season, with Chelsea the last to do so in 2017/18.

Manager Arne Slot admitted it is his “job to find answers” as his side has now conceded 42 goals this season – already more than last year with seven games still to play.

“It is still not good enough… they were the better team,” he added.

Liverpool had the chance to move into the top four, but another missed opportunity leaves them battling with Chelsea for a Champions League qualification spot.
