Liverpool snatched a late winner against Nottingham Forest, while Chelsea were pegged back at the death by Burnley.
Elsewhere, Manchester City kept the pressure on Arsenal with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium.
Here, Sport Just Sport writer Alex Rhodes breaks down the winners and losers from Matchday 27 after a chaotic weekend of top-flight action.
Brighton and Hove Albion: Winner
In a historic day for James Milner, the Seagulls ended their winless streak and moved nine points clear of relegation.
The Englishman has now made the most Premier League appearances, 654, surpassing Gareth Barry, who had held the record for over five years.
He spoke after the game, saying he still has the “drive and hunger” and wants “to be the best every day”.
Fabian Hürzeler’s side controlled the match, with two first-half goals enough to seal their first away win since November.
Danny Welbeck has now scored four goals in five games against Brentford, while the Bees struggled to take their chances in front of goal.
Chelsea FC: Loser
The Blues were held to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in a performance manager Liam Rosenior described as “disappointing”.
Joao Pedro gave the hosts the early advantage before a stoppage-time equaliser from Burnley’s Zian Flemming denied Chelsea all three points.
A red card for Wesley Fofana shifted momentum and allowed the Clarets back into the contest as the London side slumped to a second consecutive draw after previously relinquishing a 2-0 advantage against Leeds.
Chelsea have now dropped 17 points from winning positions at home, only losing more (20) in the 1996/97 season.
This result leaves them level with Manchester United and Liverpool on points in an increasingly competitive race for the top four.

Liverpool FC: Winner
Despite an unconvincing performance, dropped points by top four rivals Chelsea and Aston Villa moved the Reds closer to Champions League qualification.
A 97th-minute winner from Alexis Mac Allister broke the deadlock as the travelling side claimed all three points.
This marked the 48th time Liverpool have scored a stoppage-time winner in the league, 12 more than any other side.
Arne Slot’s side lacked creativity, as inventive midfielder Florian Wirtz suffered an injury in the pre-game warm-up.
However, the introduction of 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha provided fresh energy and attacking flair to the Dutchman’s team.
Former Liverpool full-back Jamie Carragher noted post-match that Ngumoha “did more in 15 minutes than Salah and Gakpo did before that,” highlighting his impact.
Sunderland AFC: Loser
Fulham snapped a three-game losing streak as Sunderland suffered a second successive home defeat.
Despite captain Granit Xhaka returning from injury, the Black Cats fell to a third league defeat in a row.
Enzo Le Fee converted from the penalty spot for the home side, but goals for Raul Jiménez and Alex Iwobi set the Cottagers as front-runners in the match.
The result drops Sunderland to 12th in the league, with Régis Le Bris’ squad yet to earn three points against Fulham since December 16, 2017.
Leeds United: Winner
Daniel Farke’s team held Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw at Villa Park.
Anton Stach opened the scoring with a long-range free-kick for Leeds after 30 minutes, catching goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez by surprise.
Villa equalised late through Tammy Abraham, who scored his first league goal since joining in January.
Despite the draw, Leeds have equalled their points total, 31, from their previous league campaign when they were relegated to the EFL Championship.
Losses for Tottenham, Nottingham Forest and a goalless draw for West Ham moved the Yorkshire side six points above relegation.
Tottenham Hotspur: Loser
Igor Tudor had a difficult start as Tottenham manager, as they endured a 4-1 defeat at home to Arsenal.
Post-match, the Croatian admitted: “I know the truth [about this team], now I saw the truth.
“It’s not nice, but it is how it is.”
Randal Kolo Muani equalised shortly after Eberechi Eze opened the scoring for the Gunners, but Spurs were unable to maintain their momentum.
Arsenal responded emphatically, adding a further three goals and registering 14 more shots in the game than their opponents.
Tottenham have failed to win in the league since December 28 and sit just four points above the relegation zone. Without swift improvement, their position could become increasingly precarious.
