Manchester City snatched a dramatic Premier League victory over Liverpool at Anfield, while Aston Villa were held to a draw by Bournemouth on the south coast.

Elsewhere, West Ham claimed three vital points in their battle to climb out the relegation zone and close the gap to Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.

Here, Sport Just Sport writer Alex Rhodes breaks down the winners and losers from Matchday 25 after a pulsating weekend of top-flight action.

Manchester City: Winners

Two goals in 10 minutes may have changed the trajectory of the Premier League season as Pep Guardiola claimed his second-ever victory at Anfield.

Despite dominating the first half, it was Liverpool who broke the deadlock after Dominic Szoboszlai’s free-kick went in off the post, temporarily leaving City nine points behind Arsenal.

However, late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland rescued the away side as drama ensued in the closing moments.

Referee Craig Pawson produced a red card for Szoboszlai, deeming a tug on Haaland’s shirt the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The Norwegian spoke on the incident after the game, saying: “I feel for him – just give the goal, don’t give a red card, simple as that.

“But I guess those are the rules.”

This result marked the first time Man City have completed the league double over the Reds since the 1936/37 season and moved them to within six points of Arsenal at the top of the table.

Liverpool: Losers

For the first time since April 2017, Liverpool have lost at Anfield after scoring first, ending a run of 109 games.

The Reds have now conceded four goals after the 90th minute this season, a joint league high, and find themselves sixth in the table, four points behind Chelsea and level on points with Brentford in seventh.

Arne Slot’s side weren’t without their chances, though.

Striker Hugo Ekitike notably squandered two clear opportunities before Szoboszlai gave them the lead with his free-kick.

The Dutchman accepted the decision after the match, saying: “I can live with the red card for Dom … that’s the rules and follow the rules is all we ask.”

West Ham: Winners

A third win in four games has lifted the Hammers to within three points of safety after Nottingham Forest suffered defeat to Leeds on Friday night.

The 2-0 victory was sealed inside the opening 30 minutes as Crysencio Summerville scored for a fifth consecutive game.

It is the first time a player for West Ham has done this since Jesse Lingard in 2021.

For Burnley, hopes of avoiding relegation appear to be fading fast.

Despite 18 attempts at goal, the Clarets were unable to find a way past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side will now be full of confidence ahead of their next fixture against an in-form Manchester United.

Newcastle United: Losers

Eddie Howe offered a brutally honest assessment after Newcastle’s latest defeat, admitting: “[I’m] not doing my job well enough at the moment.”

The Magpies thought they’d grabbed a share of the spoils in the 79th minute when Bruno Guimaraes scored from the spot, levelling the game at 2-2.

However, an 85th-minute winner from Brentford’s Dango Ouattara, making his 100th Premier League appearance, condemned the hosts to a third consecutive league loss.

A chorus of boos rang out at full-time as Newcastle slipped closer to the relegation zone.

They now sit just 10 points above the bottom three and remain 11 points adrift of Champions League qualification.

Leeds United: Winners

Leeds bounced back emphatically from their 4-0 defeat to Arsenal with a commanding 3-1 victory over Forest at Elland Road.

Manager Daniel Farke praised his players for showing “signs of a winning mentality” as they moved six points clear of the relegation zone.

Star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his 10th league goal this season, achieving this feat for the third time in his career.

Leeds will rely on his threat in a midweek clash against Chelsea, with the London side yet to lose a league match under new manager Liam Rosenior.

Farke’s side have also now won all five of their night games this season, with strong home form proving vital to their survival.

Tottenham Hotspur: Losers

“Very tough times” is how manager Thomas Frank described Tottenham’s current situation after another disappointing weekend.

Spurs were outclassed by Man United, who have now won all four games under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Their task was made even harder when defender Cristian Romero received a red card for a reckless challenge midway through the first half.

Questions over Romero’s leadership have intensified after he described Tottenham’s squad depth as “disgraceful” on social media, sparking calls for him to be stripped of the captaincy.

Frank’s side sit level with Leeds on points, only six above the relegation zone.

For a club that won the Europa League nine months ago, their current form is a cause for concern.

Tottenham host Newcastle on Tuesday night in a must-win game if they are to avoid joining the relegation battle.
