England sealed a morale-boosting 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka thanks to a 53-run victory in the third ODI in Colombo.

The visitors plundered 357-3 in their innings, with Joe Root (111 not out) and beleaguered captain Harry Brook (136 not out) driving a late surge.

Sri Lanka’s reply was anchored by Pavan Rathnayake’s maiden ODI century, but his 121 proved in vain as the hosts were dismissed for 304.

Brook hails ‘exceptional performance’

“I was working on a few things with Rooty in the nets and thankfully it paid off. I felt good,” Brook told reporters after the win.

“Rooty is exceptional to have in the side. He helps every day. It was an exceptional performance from the lads.

“I am very happy with how the spinners have bowled, bowling in tandem with the communication outstanding.

“I liked how the batters tried to put pressure back on the bowlers, even in tough conditions.”

Root praises Bethell, Brook

“You just want to win games, contribute to winning games,” Root said.

“My role in this team is pretty obvious and it is nice to help the young guys come through now that I am getting a bit older.

“It was nice out there with the way [Jacob] Bethell played and then how Harry Brook took the game on as he did and showed his versatility.

“This shows what we are capable of as a 50-over team.”

The 35-year-old added: “This is a big step forward for the group after a tough period, especially away from home. It breeds confidence ahead of the T20s.”

Hosts focus on positives

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka expressed disappointment at the result, saying: “It was a good game.

“It was disappointing at the end, but we have found a good name at number four in Rathnayake.

“We were undone by good batting from Root and Brook.

“I thought the ball might turn more but when it doesn’t, it’s hard to bowl spin at the death.”
