The second mural part of the FIVB Legacy Art Project has been unveiled in Manila, as part of the volleyball body’s goal to expand the initiative to other communities across the country.
The second FIVB Legacy Art Project is located in Alley 2 of West Crame in San Juan City and features the faces of Alas Pilipinas Men players Bryan Bagunas, Marck Espejo, Kim Malabunga, Josh Ybanez, Joshua Retamar, Leo Ordiales, and Rwenzmel Taguibolos.
Espejo, Malabunga, Ybanez, Retamar, Ordiales, and Taguibolos were accompanied by Alas Pilipinas Men head coach Angiolino Frigoni during the special ceremony for the unveiling of the art installation.
Filipino urban artist Maya Carandang said that the second mural aims to celebrate the historic campaign of the men’s national team during the recent FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
MAYA100 initiative
The Volleyball Legacy Art Project is a joint collaboration between the FIVB Volleyball Foundation and Carandang.
Carandang, who calls his large-scale murals the “MAYA100 project”, is aiming to celebrate different sports cultures through different art designs.
The first FIVB Legacy Art Project was unveiled at the Royal View Garden Residences in Manila. The mural featured the faces of top volleyball players, including Bryan Bagunas (Philippines), Tomasz Fornal (Poland), Simone Giannelli (Italy), Ricardo Lucarelli (Brazil), Jean Patry (France), Yuki Ishikawa (Japan), and Eric Shoji (USA).
The unveiling of the mural also coincided with the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship held from September 12 to September 28 in two Philippine cities.
“I am very happy to have been included in this project alongside top players from around the world. I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr Maya, who created this painting,” Ishikawa said after the first mural was unveiled.
“I hope that this artwork will serve as an opportunity for volleyball to continue developing further on a global scale.”

Community landmarks
“The expansion of the FIVB Legacy Art Project reflects the organisation’s commitment to deliver long-term benefits for host cities by supporting initiatives that promote volleyball beyond competition venues,” FIVB stated on its official website.
Maya Carandang is also expected to introduce more murals featuring different athletes since the MAYA100 initiative aims to transform 100 sports courts across the Philippines into community landmarks.
Aside from the two murals that celebrated the successful hosting of the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship, artworks featuring NBA players Kobe Bryant, Stephen Curry, Ja Morant, and Kyle Kuzma have already been unveiled in the past as part of Carandang’s MAYA100.
