After 10 years, AJ Lee made a shocking return to the squared circle on “SmackDown”, serving as the equaliser for her husband, CM Punk, in his quest to gain back the World Heavyweight Championship.
The Allstate Arena erupted once Lee’s “Let’s Light It Up” theme hit, as fans were anticipating her comeback since Punk’s return in 2023.
The 38-year-old’s appearance comes as Punk was yet again berated and slapped by Becky Lynch, who helped her husband, Seth Rollins, retain his World Heavyweight Championship in a match that included Punk in last month’s “Clash in Paris”.
Lynch, who also messed with Punk on last week’s episode of “Raw”, taunted her husband’s rival stating that he has nobody to help him.
Lee’s return
As Punk was about to exit the stage, then came out the former three-time Divas Champion, sporting her iconic crop tank top and jean shorts.
The wild-eyed Lee then skipped to the ring and attacked Lynch, while Punk watched on the sidelines with a grin.
The squabble led to Lynch leaving her Women’s Intercontinental Championship belt in the ring, which Lee picked up.
The iconic duo, who was once thought not to ever return to WWE, then shared a hug as the show ended.
“You’ve had my back for a decade. This run is for you, my wonderful weirdos,” Lee stated on X three days after her return, as the post garnered over 150,000 likes and 4.3 million views.

Lee issues tag-team challenge
On this week’s episode of “Raw”, Lee, who was wearing Lynch’s title belt, addressed the crowd, who all chanted: “Welcome back!”
“For those of you who weren’t here 10 years ago, and were really confused as to why your millennial parents were very excited on Friday, allow me to introduce myself.”
“My name is AJ Lee, and I am your favourite wrestler’s favourite wrestler,” Lee proclaimed as the crowd went wild.
Lee then stated that she was sure her wrestling career was over when she hung up her boots in 2015, mentioning that she pursued her “crazy dreams” she had in life.
“But most importantly, I went on a mental health journey. I wasn’t healthy, I needed to take care of myself.”
She was then interrupted by Lynch, who lambasted Lee for wearing her championship belt.
After a heated exchange, Lynch called on her husband to come out, as Rollins urged Lee to give back the belt.
Lee proposed that she give the title back if the heel duo agree to a mixed tag match.
Rollins then came face to face with Lee, as Punk appeared out of nowhere to blindside Rollins, attempting to hit him with a “GTS”.
A furious Rollins retreated, accepting Lee’s proposal.
The mixed tag-team match between both parties is now set for September 20 in “Wrestlepalooza.”
