Horse racing: ‘Ridiculous’ Trainers’ Championship schedule must change, says Kieren Fallon

Six-time Champion Jockey Kieren Fallon believes the UK Flat Trainers’ Championship should end on British Champions Day at Ascot in October, in line with the Jockeys’ Championship.

Speaking to Bets And Horses, Fallon said: “I think it’s ridiculous that the Flat Trainers’ Championship doesn’t finish on Champions Day, alongside the Jockeys’ Championship.

“It’s ridiculous that they have to go on competing for it until the end of the year. It makes trainers run horses when they ideally wouldn’t want to.

“Andrew Balding probably doesn’t want to be running most of his horses into December and having them out working on the gallops when it’s cold and wet.

“Then after all that, come the end of December, no one wants to know about it because the attention has gone away from it. It’s ridiculous. Nobody likes it, so why don’t they just change it?

More exciting

“Having it on Champions Day at Ascot would be so much more exciting, with it coming down to proper champions running against each other to decide the title. It would be a proper finale.”

Fallon, meanwhile, has told Bets And Horses about the horse the Charlie Appleby team are most excited about for next season.

Fallon said: “There’s a horse called Bin Jahwar that is a bit of a dark one. He was brought along steadily this season.

“He won a novice at Newmarket and then a conditions race at Newbury, where he beat a horse called King High of Owen Burrows’ that went on to win a Listed race at Pontefract a couple of weeks ago.

“If he had been ridden a bit differently at Newbury, he would have been far more impressive.

Showing speed

“For the horse that he would have beaten convincingly to come out and win a Listed race afterwards is extra special for his form.

“He’s our best two-year-old colt and he’s a monster. He’s better than Desert Castle, even though that horse was perhaps a bit unlucky in the Dewhurst.

“All good horses have speed, and Bin Jahwar has been showing us a lot of speed at home.

“He’ll likely start off in the Guineas and then head on to the Derby and he’s the horse we’re most looking forward to next year.”
