Harry Kane and Alexia Putellas made history as they won the men’s and women’s 2026 Ballon d’Or awards at the London ceremony.

Kane became the first English player in 25 years to win the prestigious award, with Michael Owen being the last to do so in 2001.

Meanwhile, Putellas won it for a record-equalling third time.

Kane wins tight race for Ballon d’Or

Since moving to Bayern Munich in August 2023, Kane has made waves across Europe and added German accolades to his name.

It was no surprise to see him in the Ballon d’Or conversation, having scored 61 goals during the qualifying Ballon d’Or period.

The race for the men’s 2026 Ballon d’Or was one of the closest in years.

Among those competing with Kane for football’s biggest individual prize were Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe, who finished second, and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who came third.

Dream come true

Taking the stage to receive his award, the emotional England captain said:

“Wow, I’m almost speechless. First of all, thanks again to France Football and the Ballon d’Or for this amazing event. Being in London, it is extra special; it felt like a good omen.”

“It’s just the journey. For any young boy or girl who wants to achieve their dream, anything is possible.

“My journey wasn’t straightforward, I didn’t go straight to the top, I had to experience a lot of loan moves and fight my way to get to where I am now.

“I hope that can give you inspiration, and thank you very much.”

Putellas wins another Ballon d’Or

London City Lionesses star signing Putellas is now only one of two players to win the women’s Ballon d’Or at least three times.

She joins her Spain international team-mate Aitana Bonmati in winning the award three times.

Putellas, who captained Barcelona to a quadruple last season, now brings the prestigious award to the Women’s Super League (WSL) following her move to London City in the 2026 summer transfer window.

“All the boys and girls around the world – if you love football and if you want to play football, play football. It doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or if you’re a girl,” Putellas said.

“Doesn’t matter where you come from. Don’t listen if someone tells you, you can’t do it.

“Believe in yourself.”
