Former Newcastle United and Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit has heard rumours that the Magpies’ Saudi owners are considering their future in football.
The ex-AC Milan star suggested there is potential upheaval at St James’ Park, noting that those involved in the takeover might now be looking at a new club instead.
The Dutchman also thought that constant sales in the summer forced Eddie Howe’s hand as he resigned, perhaps wondering if he would get money for replacements.
Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham and talisman Bruno Guimarães joined Premier League champions Arsenal, leading to the departure of Howe and the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as Magpies manager.
Constant rumours
Ultimately, Gullit felt sorry for his former club’s fans, and during an exclusive conversation with NY Sports Day, he said of the club’s owners: “I think they have had a reality check, and it’s the fans of the club who I have the greatest sympathy with.
“There are constant rumours about whether the owners want to re-evaluate their investment and key figures involved in the original takeover are looking elsewhere.
“The fans and players are left wondering what the actual long-term plan is.
“It depends on whether you’re given the backing and resources to replace the players you’ve sold.
“If you’re forced to sell without the capacity to rebuild, that’s a completely different situation.
“You must have the tools to recruit quality replacements.
“Perhaps Eddie knew he wouldn’t be able to replace those big players with top names and that was part of the reason why he decided to resign.”
