Leeds United have made James Trafford the most expensive signing in the club’s history after completing the goalkeeper’s transfer from Manchester City in a deal worth an initial £40 million.
The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Elland Road, with the fee eclipsing the previous club-record £35.5m Leeds United paid for Georginio Rutter in January 2023.
Trafford arrives after enjoying a breakthrough campaign at Manchester City, where he featured 17 times in all competitions and recorded eight clean sheets while helping the club lift two trophies.
Bright, young talent
The England goalkeeper is regarded as one of the country’s brightest talents and is expected to become a central figure in Leeds’ long-term plans as they continue strengthening ahead of the new Premier League season.
His arrival also signals the club’s willingness to invest significantly in key positions as they look to establish themselves among England’s top flight once again.
Before completing the move, Trafford shared an emotional farewell message to Manchester City after spending more than a decade with the club.
“To everyone at Man City, it was my dream to play for the first team from when I moved away from home at 12, and it makes me so proud to have achieved that last season, whilst also winning two trophies in the process,” Trafford wrote on Instagram.
“The fans singing my name was something I dreamt of when I went to the Etihad growing up through the academy.
“I wish nothing but the best for the club for the future.”
Next stage in a promising career
Trafford leaves Manchester City having progressed through the academy before fulfilling his ambition of representing the first team, and he now begins the next stage of his career with the responsibility of justifying Leeds’ record investment.
For Leeds United, securing one of England’s most promising young goalkeepers is another statement of intent as preparations continue for the new campaign.
